Can I use bread yeast to make beer or wine?
I just received my Wyeast smack-pack, and it appears to be puffed up already. Is this an indicator that it has already been activated?

    very good indeed
    Review by black dogon 17/08/2017
Works very reliably. Always gets going quickly, both when activated and when pitched. Clears up beautifully and gives an authentic result. My only grumble? The price.

    A beast of a yeast.
    Review by Daveon 08/06/2016
This true top-cropping yeast will jump out of the fermenter if you don't watch it. A sheer delight to brew with.

    Didn't inflate
    Review by Jonon 26/11/2015
This was my first time using a Wyeast smack pack. After purchase I left the packet in the fridge for about a month until brewday. It was still well within the best before date though. As directed I located and burst the inner sachet, then mixed it all together. After six hours the packet still hadn't inflated and I promptly pitched a replacement dry yeast. The contents of the packet was eventually added to two successive starter worts and finally I managed to grow a reasonable size culture which I will use in a future batch. The smell of the final culture was very nice indeed and I'm looking forward to using this yeast. My low rating is simply a reflection of my experience with the product on brewday rather than Brewuk's service or the yeast strain itself.

    Tasting great

Bought to make a TT Landlord clone. Started well, held its krausen persistently until we crash chilled it, then dropped clean. Now in secondary waiting to be wet hopped.

Bit of a monster, good for topcropping!!
    Review by Michaelon 13/09/2015
First time using this yeast but in an IPA recipe done before. Kept in the fridge for about a month before had time to use it then added it to a 1 litre starter. Came down the next day to find a krausen that had literally climbed out of the 2l conical flask! Put into the brew and fermented at 18C. 2 weeks of non-stop climbing out of the fv followed, along with a unique aroma that I quite liked but SWMBO thought stank of old socks!! Attenuation of 81% so ended up with 7.1% ABV. All targets reached on the brew, so this must have just munched through all the sugars!

End result flocculated very well and despite being a whole lot stronger, the maltiness really came through and ended up with a wonderfully balanced beer. Definitely going to experiment with this more...!

    So far so good
    Review by Davidon 04/08/2015
Bought the Wyeast for the first time for an all grain Timothy Taylor Landlord clone. First of all, very quick delivery from Brewuk, couldn't have been any quicker. Once received it was a very fresh according to the date on the packet. I kept it in the fridge for a further 2 weeks. After giving the pack a firm smack, it started to swell slowly at first, then after 3 hours it was, what looked like fully swollen, after about 5 hours from smacking it, I then pitched it direct into the wort. No signs of life after 24 hours so I upped the wort temp by 1 degree to about 19 degs and then it took off and I now have a very healthy looking krausen. It's still in the fermenter, so can't comment on taste, but looking forward to this brew. Got a couple more sachets to try for my next couple of different brews

    Great product
    Review by Stevenon 05/05/2015
Been using this when making the Timothy Taylor Landlord clone with the Brew UK all grain kit in my Braumeister. The improvement over standard dry yeast is remarkable, have used it 5 times with great compliments from family and friends on the resulting beer. Love the pod in the sachet design and that it starts fermenting inside the sachet, you can hear it after a couple of hours as the sachet starts to swell and the beer is very quickly fermenting, in my case at 18C it's all over in 5 days.

Not as aggresive as I was led to believe, it has made a cheap Geordie brew kit with some Fuggles hop tea into a winner in my book.

    Started fast
    Review by Paulon 13/08/2013
I have read other reviews which say this yeast is slow. I didn't find that. Started overnight and produced loads of foam. Fermented out in 5 days.

    Amazing
Review by The Jolly Breweron 15/11/2012
This yeast is quite simply amazing!!!!

Good top fermenter that ferments well and has an incredible flavour profile.

If you want to add another dimension to your beers, use this yeast.
