What is a yeast starter and do I need to make one?
Can I use bread yeast to make beer or wine?
I just received my Wyeast smack-pack, and it appears to be puffed up already. Is this an indicator that it has already been activated?

    good flavour
    Review by nealon 31/05/2016
I was suprised at how quick and active this was, had to ditch the airlock in favour of a blow off tube, it builds a good krausen and coupled with some East Kent Golding hops has produced a cracking IPA, I'll definitely use this again !

    Excellent to use
    Review by Markon 06/04/2016
First time I've tried using liquid yeast following the BrewDog Original Punk IPA recipe, only used dried before, works really well, really quick to activate and ferment, would recommend.

Good experiences with this one so far
    Review by LFon 19/10/2015
Worked well, just wacked the packet, waited a couple of hours, and then poured it into the wort. I worried that it might have been too sudden, but 6 days later fermentation was almost compelted. This is the second time I've used this one. I'm expecting a nice dry finish to the beer.

    Great for Kernel Extract Kit
    Review by Disequilibrium brewingon 27/03/2014
Used this one with the outstanding Kernel Citra Extract kit and it worked a treat. When it arrived it was pretty expanded already, which made it quite hard to 'smack' it, but after smacking it was so full it burst slightly when I gave it a test shake. Still, worked out brilliantly to make the best brew I've made yet.

    Nice stuff!
    Review by Anthonyon 19/11/2013
A good neutral ale yeast perfect for pale ales and IPA's where you want the hops and malt to shine. Not as flocculant as 1272 or 1217 though so a cold crash is recommended.

    This is a Beast!
    Review by CptFredericksonon 04/06/2013
A fairly fast start, rapidly turning to a huge Krausen that will climb out of the FV. Nice clean falvour as expected (ferment at 18-19C for this) and flocs better than I thought it might. Definitely worth cold crashing for a day or so though.

    control your temperature!
    Review by Kaion 25/04/2013
WYeast 1056 is a great and clean-fermenting yeast, as long as you control the temperature and don't let it rise too much. It gets fruity and a bit off-piste if allowed to rise past 22 (in the fermenter, remember that any reading on the outside of the FV is only indicative of the conditions inside it)

    Smelling great already but feisty!
    Review by robon 13/12/2012
I smacked the pack 6 hours in advance of pitching and the packet worked a treat. I forgot to aereate my wort prior to pitching the yeast but I needn't have been concerned. Even without this the yeast had set to work within 10 hours. 24 hours later and the krausen was coming up into the airlock despite a good 8-10 inches headroom in fermentor. After a brief panic I sanitised and changed my airlock. Had to repeat this 4 times but sure enough the krausen died down and it's currently fermenting just lovely :)

Fast to show, ferments and clears well, leaves a refreshing, slightly citrus flavour. Recommended for those light summer beers

    Great yeastie
    Review by Herbieon 21/01/2010
Bought this as my first try of liquid yeast and was surprised at how easy it was. Just smacked the pack to break the yeast nutrient sachet, allowed to swell for 3 hours and pitched into my APA. Started fermenting with a few hours and after 4 days has almost finished.

I love the range provided by the wyeast yeasts and opens up a whole world of possibilities.

If you reuse by pitching your next brew onto the yeast cake then makes them quite economical too.
