    Crazy Crazy Sublime Yeast

    Review by on

36 hours with full temperature control to nearest 0.5 degrees and yeast stater made up. Nothing. This stuff made lager yeast look fast. Then.....37 hours in.....wort appeared to be....boiling. Switched from fermentation lock (blown out!) to blow off valve. Mount Vesuvius. So...I then left too long to ferment in the end and had to reseed with an ale yeast. Big mistake. Dangerous levels of C02 in bottles with just a little priming....a lot of gushers a month later and often dominant (unwanted flavours) from secondary ale yeast. 6 months in....just cracked open a bottle. What a yeast! WLP530 has- I'm no scientist, although I would say the best word to describe this would be- 'eaten' the secondary yeast entirely. It's also 'eaten' much of the C02. And some of the maltose. I'm left with the opposite of what I had. A stunning crystal clear Tripel with a lovely flavour from WLP530. No traces whatsoever of secondary yeast used. Under-carbonated (?!) and hops now a bit too dominant. The exact opposite of what I had six months ago. This is one crazy yeast. Go easy on the hops. Do not use with any other yeast, ferment with a blow off valve or big headroom (an absolute must) and most of all....be patient.

Used this last weekend for a Belgian Blonde Strong beer-very disappointed and sorry to say fermentation did not start...........at all. This was kept under refrigeration as soon as I received it. Left the wort as long as I dared but ended up using a SafAle BE-256 dry yeast to save my beer and fermentation started within 6 hours after pitching the SafAle yeast. Maybe I just had a duff one or the product got too warm in transit but at £6.99 I will probably not buy/use another one.
