Not quite according to plan but very promising so far
    Review by Glynon 03/09/2018
First time brewing stout from all grain. I did this as BIAB with full volume from the start. Hit and slightly exceeded target OG (I got 1.056 vs target 1.054) and pitched (rehydrated dry yeast). Unfortunately fermentation stopped at around 1.025 which was short of the 1.017 target. I made up a starter with DME and another sachet of yeast and that kicked it off again slowly. Eventually settled at around 1.02 near as makes no difference, so given the additional DME and that my original OG was higher than targetted, I reckoned that was close enough.
Soaked the cacao nibs in vodka as per recommendation then drained and added in a muslin bag (the vodka drained off was quite nice too).
Bottled after another week and put in the cellar. Have just tried first bottle - v. nice, smooth and just the right level of chocolate and the best thing is that I think this will improve substantially with time so should be in its prime around Christmas.
I don't know why the ferment stopped where it did - but because I was able to drop it some with a re-start then I suspect the pitching rate. Running this through an online pitch calculator it recommends two sachets of dried yeast for a batch like this, so if I had started with more yeast then perhaps it would have hit target gravity first time around. Should check pitching rates every new recipe TBH.

Great kit, and versatile jumping off point
    Review by Alexon 02/08/2018
I've used this kit 3 times, but never made velveteen. For each brew, I've made the kit as per instructions, save for adding the cocoa nibs. I've added cinder toffee once, and maple syrup and mincemeat twice. The velveteen is a superb starting point for this kind of messing around, both beers were excellent.
I brew in my kitchen using a fairly amateur set up (insulated mash tun made from a Gatorade drum; vorlauf and sparge using a jug and piece of foil, stove top boiler on a big wok burner; copper wort coller, plastic fermenting bin. Generally bottle the beer (it matures well in the bottle, too). Great results!

My first stout and what a belter !
    Review by Davidon 19/01/2018
Thought I would try something a little different from my usual Hoppy beers and this took my fancy as ideal for Christmas & New Year. The Brew went fine, I made it in my Karstein system and as ever the instructions were clear & simple. Once first fermentation had died down I added the cocoa nibs and kept tasting daily as the flavour kept increasing. After about 5 days I bottled it off. I have tried the first bottle after a week conditioning & the taste is lovely with a chocolatey back taste. For me this is one of those beers that is great to have in to drink an odd bottle of now & then.

    Wonderful stout
    Review by Stephenon 27/11/2017
This is a fine example of a lovely chocolate stout. The brewing and fermentation process is straight forward and simple to follow and the end result was a silky smooth very chocolatey stout that will not last very long I'm sure. Also had a fantastic aroma when fermenting that was commented upon by several who came to my house. People thought I was making chocolate!!! I will definitely make this stout again.

    Excellent stout
    Review by Lake Brewron 27/09/2017
Brewed as per instructions. Hit the og spot on. Lovely smell in the fermenter. Instructions recommend soaking the cocao nibs in vodka to sterilise them before adding to the fementer. As I don't drink vodka I used Calvados and it worked fine both for sterilising and for taste.
Used Wyeast Irish ale yeast and this fermented nicely if a little slowly. Left in primary for 2 weeks then into mini kegs and bottles.
Everybody who has tried this loves it. A real ale drinker friend of mine rated it as superb !. This won't last long so I've ordered another kit today.

    Silky, smooth and disappearing fast
    Review by Peter Kon 03/06/2017
Have brewed this mainly for family and friends and they all love it. Even I can tell it's a good brew (just not ever been much of a stout drinker), so I am very pleased with this. It is very smooth indeed and yet is easy to drink. I decided to sterilise the cocoa nibs in bourbon (!!). Don't know for sure if this also imparted any flavour or not, but nobody seems to mind......
I will be making this one again, that's for sure.

    OK but not great
    Review by TimTooson 11/12/2016
Brewed on a BM and followed the mashing schedule to the letter. I opted for the liquid yeast so paid a bit more in the hope of something special.
I fermented with good temperature control at the recommended set-point but the fermentation stalled @ 1025, leaving my abv @ 3.4%. I was a bit let down but it tastes ok.
    Wont be doing again though.

    The best!
    Review by Robon 30/11/2016
Context: All grain brewing for one year, having treated myself to the Brew UK deluxe all grain equipment this time last year. During the year I have used the all grain recipe kits and all have turned out great. That's been 17 brews!

Veleveteen: Whereas all my brews using the Brew UK all grain kits have been fantastic, this is awesome.
If chocolate stout floats your boat then this is a must. The lactose give is a rounded palette that results in a pint you can just drink and drink and drink. I cannot recommend it enough.

    Absolutely superb!
    Review by Stephenon 28/11/2016
I've been home brewing for 40 years and using whole grain recipes (mainly from Dave Line) and this is right up there with the very best that I've done. A lovely deep chocolate taste that is extremely smooth on the palate. My wife absolutely loves it too, and described it as like drinking liquid galaxy chocolate. I shall definitely be buying this again.

    Smooth as velvet
    Review by Rogeron 21/10/2016
An absolutely wonderful beer. Smooth, velvety, just the right hint of chocolate, wonderful mouthfeel, dark, comforting. This is one that will be on my brew again list all the time. My 25th brew with the Grainfather and everyone who has tasted it says it's my best. Chuffed!

    Dark, Smooth and decidedly moreish
    Review by Derekon 15/05/2016
I brewed this about 4 weeks ago and it has just been transferred to keg. During transfer i decided to have a sly half pint of this for testing reasons, obviously. Oh my word! What an amazing beer, very very smooth and deliriously roasty with a hint of chocolate but not over powering and a lovely full mouth feel from the lactose and oats.
Going with a very low carb on this but after tasting this all i can say is wow!
