    lovely wine
    Review by anthony on 10/11/2013
I first used Solomon Grundy Wine kits 15 years ago for our wedding celebrations, but I don't remember it being this good.I thought I would try it again to get a supply of wine in for Christmas, but have had to purchase another because it is so drinkable. I didn't rush it,the fermenting temperature was approx. 15degrees but it only took two weeks, it cleared in 24 hours and was immediately drinkable. Very nice.

Agree totally with "intensivecarenurse". This one even impressed my daughter and son-in-law. But the Platinum range is even better.

    WOW!!! This is SUPERB!!!
    Review by IntensiveCareNurseon 02/02/2011
I purchased one of these red merlot kits from Brew having been sorely disappointed with a canned thirty bottle kit... I had taken a break from home brewed wine of over twenty years, coming back to the craft due to having heard the real improvement in kit quality since I last brewed. I started with a Muntons 30 bottle red kit, and was really miffed as to how weak, chemical tasting and insipid it turned out...
A little research highlighted the Solomon Grundy Gold range to make "excellent" wine and to be supposedly the very best value for money. On the basis of this I decided to try one, although believing kit qualities to be no better than back in the 1980's... I thought that although it might not be any worse than my first attempt, it would be unlikely to be much better. The Merlot kit had the best reviews, so I decided to start with that one.
The main concentrate for the wine comes in a plastic bottle, and by adding 4kg of brewers sugar, supplied yeast nutrient & yeast, the brew was soon bubbling away in my airing cupboard (but not for long). The wine had brewed out to an indicated 0.995 OG in just 6 days!!! The box said 5 days (and my airing cupboard is not as hot as the wine could stand), so this is completely believeable! A liquid wine compound is then added after the wine has brewed out (a new idea to me). Adding the finings was next, and the instructions then promised a clear wine within 24 hours (which I also took with a pinch of salt). The wine DID in fact appear to clear in 24 hours, although I left mine for 5 days to be sure (I didnt want to pick up any finings). The result was a syphoned crystal clear & fruity smelling wine in 10 days flat!
Tasting notes: Deep colour. Nose of deep berry fruits & raspberries. Smooth finish. NO chemical aftertaste whatsoever. Without one word of a lie, no worse (in ANY detectable way) than a cheaper end New World red for around £3 to £4!
I am UTTERLY flabbergasted with this kit, which at £27 (inc brewing sugar) comes out at just 90p per delectable bottle. Do not be put off by the fast brewing/clearing time, as this does not appear to impinge on the overall wine quality.
I am currently trying a more expensive Beaverdale red (also well reviewed) that will come out at £1.27 per bottle, which is over one third more in price. Will it really be one whole third better than the Solomon Grundy??? I can hardly believe it, but will look forward to finding out!
The Solomon Grundy Gold Merlot is truly an amazing wine kit, and by comparison there was nothing anywhere near as good as it back in the 1980's.
    Totally recommended!
