Pocket Refractometer

Refractometers are precision optical instruments that determine density on the basis of the refractive index of a liquid. Accurate yet simple to use: just place a few drops of liquid on the prism, and immediately read off the density.

Special inexpensive model for beer makers. Scale 0 - 18° Plato (1.000 - 1.072 S.G.). Automatic temperature correction.

Forget having to mess about with hydrometer and thermometer then temp adjusting. This gives you a instant gravity reading in Plato. Just multiply the reading by 4 to get the specific gravity reading.

Additional calculations are required of using to measure fermenting wort as alcohol effects the reading and instructions for this are not included.

Wished I had bought one years ago

Brilliant bit of kit, makes it so quick to take a S.G. reading at anytime during the brewing process. Use mine with the Beersmith calculator tool software to do conversions and adjustments.

    Quick, easy and accurate
    Review by Muddyon 29/01/2017
Really quick and easy now to take a quick and accurate reading.

Simple instructions for the initial calibration

I then used my hydrometer and the calculator in BeerSmith (recommended brewing software and mobile app) to tweak the Refractor.

Nice piece of kit for the more serious home brewer at an accessible price.

    So handy
    Review by Philon 03/06/2016
You do need to apply a different conversion factor at the start and the end of the fermentation. That's because towards the end the (now hopefully less) sugar is dissolved in an alcohol/water mix, so you have to allow for the presence of alcohol. Luckily there are a few calculators around that do this for you, e.g. those included with Beer Smith 2 and Brewer's Friend (website only -- the app doesn't include conversion for the presence of alcohol).

Anyway, all this takes moments, and just two or three drops. It comes with a perfectly good small plastic dropper, by the way. Highly recommended. The only time I went back to a hydrometer was for a very high gravity beer that went off the refractometer's scale.

    Quick to use
    Review by Johnon 27/02/2016
I bought this because my beer is too strong and quick readings are what I need. It's simple instructions are easy to follow and to calibrate. Instructions do not tell you how to convert to compare against hydrometer readings, I read somewhere that you multiply by 4. I found I had to multiply by 4.18 on my first brew, now I know can't wait to use again.

    Immediate, easy, efficient
    Review by Vestanon 05/01/2016
Used several times on two brews now. Very easy to calibrate and use. Just drip a couple of drops of wort/beer on the lens, hold up to the light and read. Due to paranoia, double checked with a hydrometer so far and found it to be very precise, especially when combined with my brewing software of choice for post fermentation levels, after calibrating it to the software. Very impressed, hasn't needed to be re-calibrated yet. Will miss my 100 ml tasters though!

I can now measure the gravity of the pre-boil hot wort and post boil run off into the fermenter with accurate results and compare these to the recipe calculator figures.
A really fascinating piece of equipment which for the serious home brewer is an absolute must have.
