    Smugglers Brew
    Review by Russellon 31/05/2017
My long term favourite as it is reliable and delivers a superb drink. Muntons have now ceased to put a glued paper wrapping round the cans of wort. Warming the cans in water caused the paper and glue to melt risking contaminating to brew so it need pre-soaking to remove the wrapping before use. Crazy idea difficult to believe the best home brewing company around ever allowed it.

    Budget Smugglers
    Review by Mikeon 17/05/2017
I have tried 2 of these kits now and they are superb. Fantastic sweet, malty taste. Ready to drink in about three weeks from starting the kit.
Clear as a bell with good head retention which laces the glass nicely.
At just over 50p a pint it is 1/6th of the price of a pub pint and better. You'll always have friends visiting when you have a keg or two of this on the go.

This kit is a fantastic bitter. i have now brewed this beer about 5 times and each time it delivers. Tastes as good as anything you can buy in a pub. Try it.

Just ordered my second kit of this. The first was out of this world. Fantastic stuff. As somebody else said, well worth a few more pennies.

    My benchmark beer
    Review by Russellon 04/11/2015
I have been drinking Smugglers for several years now and judge all beers against it. I find it has a great taste and is very dependable and with finings clears in about a week. I kept trying others and being disappointed but now I have found Munton's American IPA ordering a beer kit is slightly harder - decisions, decisions....

I keep coming back to this one...
    Review by JudeSunFloweron 29/05/2013
Started with Woodfordes then found Muntons... This is a particularly good kit complemented by all those that have tried it. I return to it over and over as a dependable and straightforward brew that never disappoints.
Well worth a few extra pennies.
... And make sure you have another brewing in the wings. It doesn't hang around.

    Absolutely Lovely
    Review by Benon 29/10/2012
I decided to try the Munton's Gold Smuggler as a test of my growing feeling that when it comes to beer kits, 2 can kits are really the way to go. I figured that while this is a little more expensive, if was worthwhile to see what the difference in taste was.

I followed the instructions and gave the beer about 2 weeks or so in the fermenter, adding about 30g of Fuggles hops in the last 5 days. I added Youngs Finings in the last two days, since I'd had a few issues with cloudier beer and wanted to see how much of a difference these would make.

Fast forward a couple of weeks in the keg, and the beer was absolutely lovely. A real malty body, with a nice, hoppy bitter edge. Very much a good traditional bitter and clear as you like (which I imagine the fining helped with).

Definitely a top kit - this one will no doubt be a regular once I've worked out what my favourites are!

    Simply brilliant
    Review by Jimmy Con 16/06/2012
I brewed this kit as my first 2 can kit and my god is it good!

Brewed short to 22 litres and ended up with a 5.3% abv, totally clear very quickly and found myself drinking it a little early in the bottle as it was so good even when young.

Highly recommend this one, I will keep come back to this for sure!

1st ever dip into the homebrew world for me and this smugglers ale looks as if its going to be great.
Really easy for a novice like me to brew this kit. Although at the premium end of the market, the taste is excellent and worth the price.
    Will brew this again.

    A superior brew - Fab-u-lous!
    Review by Exponenton 26/01/2012
This is the second of the 2 can kits i've tried (also brewed Wherry) and can say that this is a step up. Nice bitter taste, kept it's head all the way down with a lovely smooth finish.

    About to order another!

I'm now a home brew convert
    Review by Quafferon 14/05/2011
With reasonable beer £1.50 a bottle in Tesco's (on a good day) or £3.30+ a pint in most Cambridge pubs I had had enough. I remember home brew of old and the "home brew" taste that it always had. This doesn't. I started with a high-end kit and this one has really got me hooked.

My first home brew and if I had a pint of this in a pub I'd certainly order another. The closest commercial brew I would liken it to is Adnams Broadside (draft not the stronger bottles). It has really good body and a great deep bitter taste - came out at 5.2% following the instructions and 48p/500ml.

Coopers IPA brewed after and not bad at all, but lacking some of the body of this 3.6Kg kit (even with Muntons beer enhancer) but it was 36p/500ml. St Peters Ruby Red Ale in the bucket now and Woodfords Wherry up next.

    What fun :o)

    Damn Good Brew!!
    Review by Brew Brotherson 21/05/2010
We made this kit in April 2010 as per the instructions. Even though the weather is warmer this time of year, we still used the heating belt while in the fermenting bucket. It was finished on the 6th day and we used spray malt in 20 bottles and 20 with brewers sugar.
It needed slightly longer for it to clear than stated on the instructions, but when it cleared it was a cracking beer.
We would brew this one again. We think Muntons are probably the best kits, but we have now progressed to all grain brewing.
If we do make any more kits we will definately put reviews on.

    Impressed!
    Review by Silversaxmanon 31/01/2010
Many years ago I tried homebrew. YUK!! Recently a friend was telling me how much homebrew had improved, and if I was to try again, not to waste my money on the cheap kits - they were for the get drunk - taste does not matter crowd.

So I bought the equipment and kit from here. And waht a refreshing experience - A1 cutomer service, responding quickly and in detail to my questions. That why I have come back to buy more!!

So, the kit. Well I brewed in the large wine fermenter type vessel with a heater around the bottom as it was winter. I had an air lock at the top and the bubbles came fast and furious. It actually continued two days longer than instructions. I then transferred to a king keg top tap (the tap is not vet good, no control, so I will change that) and added Munstons beer enhancer. And on the recomendation on my friend added some geltine. And waited. And waited. First trun of the very akward tap and the beer blasted out, so plenty of pressure was in there! Fist few trail glasses were cloudly, but BOY-OH BOY!! A wondefull bitter taste follwed by hoppt/malty taste. Kept its wonderful creamy head until all drank. Very clear and what a wonderful colour! I thought the photo on the box might have been digittaly enhanced - but no - mine was even better - no more commercail bottle beers for me. Woukld I buy again? I am doing that right now, and will try some other Munstons.

As an aside I was very suprised to know that I did not live far far from Munstons Brdlington operation - never knew it was there - so that is evn better as I like to support local business. Try it.

This was the first kit I made. Without doubt the best I've brewed .Primed with light spray malt. Deep, rich, smooth, flavour, Bottled and the taste is getting better
