Details:

Keeping the British Troops supplied with fresh beer out in the British East Indies proved to be a problem during the 19th century. The lengthy journey by sailing ship caused the beers to spoil and a special brew therefore had to be supplied - India Pale Ale. This was brewed to a high alcohol strength to keep bacteria at bay during the voyage. Upon arrival the beer was watered down to normal pub strength for the troops. Of course the officers had access to the non-diluted version!

However you have a choice. Recreate India Pale Ale, brewed to the Troops Tipple at approximately 1040 OG strength or the Higher Rank's Reserve version in its higher strength form.

No Additional sugar required.

Basic beer brewing equipment is required: Starter Equipment set and 25 litre fermentation bin and lid.

Barrel or Bottles, see Need to know - Barrel or Bottle for more information.

    Troops Tipple
    Review by PSFon 27/08/2012
So far I have only made the Troops Tipple, but it was very smooth and good tasting IPA. Didn't stay in the keg long, so will buy again and think about trying the Officers Reserve next time.

    The ale is the bomb
    Review by Timon 29/05/2012
The instructions talk of adding an extra 1kg sugar to make this up to the officers recipe. Whilst brewing this beer I read that and thought, yeah, I have some sugar kicking around, let do it. best decision ever! This beer is the bomb. 4 pints and I'm ready to fall on the floor. It tastes great, I have been brewing for 18 months now, I'm a 2 pint a night guy, literally every night. 7 days a week. This stuff knocks me out. I think I could kill myself on a proper session of this stufff. :) Couldn't recommend this enough. Just hit BUY!

    Brewed both types.
    Review by Rodderson 12/09/2010
Troops tipple didn't even touch the sides, it went down so smoothly. Officers reserve had identical taste but strictly an indoor drink as the fresh air knocked me sideways.
