    Kolsch is OK

    Review by on

Spending time around Koln gives you the opportunity to try very many varieties of Kolsch, some boring but some really individual. This recipe did not really work out for me and I was never 100% satisfied with the flavours. However it was not a boring drink and I will be coming back to this again some time soon - maybe this winter as it gets cold and I can condition out in the shed. Agree with other reviewers, WYeast packets can be tricky to smash correctly and I have had the occasional one not quite working

    4th time lucky

    Review by on

I really enjoyed this the first time I did it but unfortunately haven't had much luck since. This is nothing to do with the kit itself but using liquid yeast for the last 2 attempts has been unsuccessful, a dry yeast option for the kit may help. The first time the wye yeast just didn't seem to get started and once it did the damage was already done and 20 litres went straight down the sink. The 3rd batch was not a total loss but the white labs yeast was a week over best by date and this again seems to have resulted in a slowish start and slight unpleasant background taste. I'll give this one one more try with extreme care!
