Details

Premium top tap barrel. Its uses a float system which means that beer is drawn from near the surface and therefore always the clearest beer and you don't need to wait for the whole barrel to clear as with bottom tap systems. Having the tap up high also means that you can stand the barrel on the floor and still get a glass under the tap.

Good, if you replace the tap and check which float it has.
    Review by Winchyon 22/11/2013
I have had two of these barrels for a couple of years now and they're both working well. However, initially I had some trouble with one of the floats sucking air and some leakage around one of the tap seals. I bought the barrels from different suppliers and they came with different floats. I replaced the troublesome float with a Latstock float (which the other barrel came fitted with) and this fixed the problem. The leaking tap seal responded to tightening.
As others have said, the taps that the barrels come with are pretty poor and I replaced both with Deluxe Sparkler Taps, which are very much better. If you're drinking the barrel quickly, you may have to use a squirt or two of CO2 to keep the pressure up but not a lot. I probably use as much CO2 when cleaning the barrels to drive sterilising fluid through the float system as I do to keep pressure on the beer. I've kept beer in these for over 6 months with no loss of pressure and no spoilage.

    Avoid
    Review by Berton 22/02/2011
I've had one of these for a year now and I would recommend you go with the bottom tap barrels.

Drawing the beer off the top is not a great idea, as its more likely to be oxidised. Yes a nice layer of CO2 should protect it, but I've found all the beers I put in my Top Tap kegs degrade quite quickly. All the beers I put in my economy bottom tap barrel are always great.

With my last beer I found the floatation device kept getting an airlock and I had to open it up and re-seat it twice. Once fixed, I gave I a blast of CO2. That's the other downside is you end up going through the CO2 gas as you always need to top it up more than you would a bottom tap.

And ditto on the last review with the tap, its rubbish. As you will always need good pressure to dispense beer from a top tap, you get two modes...full rocket blast or dribble.

I've never had a problem with bottom tap barrels kicking up the sediment. I've read a number of comments that using finings can make the sediment loose and fluffy rather than it compacting down at the bottom. Personally I don't use finings so its worth experimenting if you get that problem.

    Not perfect..
    Review by Silversaxmanon 31/01/2010
It is a very well constructed keg and seems very strong. You must ensure you smear vasaline around the screw parts. Top tap in my view is better as teh floatation device (think of ballcock in a wc) means you are always drawing beer from the top and not capturing teh sediment as it floats on down to the bottom.

However... the tap is not very good at all. It is a screw type, but not responisive to gentle, even pressure. This means when the keg is under pressure the beer comes out at a rate of knots - uncontroalbel almost. This spoils the intitial few pints.

I will replace with a swing type tap as this have better flow control.
