Add 2.7L water for every KG of grain.
There is a 3.5L dead space underneath the basket when it is in the boiler.
Use this calculation to work out the mash water amount :
(Grain weight x 2.7) +3.5 = mash water

Boil
3L per hour boil off (this is from a 28L pre boil volume. If you have a 20L pre boil volume this will be 3.5L per hour boil off. )

Efficiency
Average mash efficiency
85% (this is the average based on many trials and can vary depending on grains. Highest mash efficiency I have had is 88.7% and lowest is 79%)

Other factors
2L lost to trub

    Fantastic All Grain Kit
    Review by Grahamon 31/03/2017
I have just completed my 5th brew using The Grainfather and have been really impressed at the quality of the kit and the quality of the beer produced. I have been doing all grain brewing for a while now using a homemade cooler mash-tun, a converted boiler and homemade wort cooler but decided to simplify my life and invest in this kit. The Grainfather will not disappoint and worked well right out of the box. So far I have successfully brewed a couple of single hop bitters, a green hopped ale using home grown First Gold, a smooth dark porter and an English IPA. Go on treat yourself!

    Well worth it!
    Review by Danon 01/01/2017
While my third brew on this great bit of kit boils I thought I'd write a quick review! This is a great bit of kit that I would recommend both for beginners to all grain brewing and those with more experience. Previously I used a separate hot liquor tun/boiler (one electric pot doing both) and cool box mash tun which worked perfectly well but was a bit of a faff with the limited space I have in the kitchen of my flat, and was also a massive pain to clean after brewing. The Grainfather takes up much less space as the whole hot side of the process is done in a single vessel. It is also much easier and quicker to clean afterwards. Having control of the mash temperature is really useful (I'm planning on doing a Berliner Weisse soon which requires keeping the wort at around 30-40 degrees C for several days while the lactobacillus sours it which wouldn't have been easy to achieve with my previous system). The recirculation system is great and gives very clear wort. The counterflow chiller is a really lovely touch which lets you transfer the boiled wort directly into the fermenter and have it at about the right temperature for pitching (before I was having to nervously wait for 30-45 minutes for my immersion heater to get the temp down hoping no infections got in in that time!). If you're thinking of buying one, do it, you won't regret it!

    Well worth getting.
    Review by Steveon 15/12/2016
If you are serious about all grain brewing this is a fantastic piece of equipment.
It doesn't take up too much room, is easy to use and very efficient. Gets to the boil quickly and is great at maintaining the correct temperatures.
Loads of advice online as many people have them so worth checking out the forums about these.
My only advice is....buy one! You won't regret it.

    Overall highly recommended
    Review by Stevenon 27/09/2016
Well I've used it at last
    It's well put together
When assembling, the top sieve looks like it's going to be nuisance however as advised by the instructions it fits easily when the dust from the grain is present
I'm used to boiling on the stove top and the the Grainmaster seemed to take a while to come to the boil but when it did it's a good vigorous boil - I won't be tempted to push the sparge to 30L
There is a good selection of adaptors for the heat exchanger
The sparge takes a while because of the grade of the sieves
Close the valve when removing the recirculation pipe
The inner pipe will drop off when emptying the grain!
I love the control over mash temperature and will be experimenting with stepped mashes
The compactness of the Grainmaster means I worked much tidier than usual and it's very much easier to clean
I have not given 5* because of the following:
Screws supplied for the controller are difficult to fit
It would be good for the leads to be removeable for taking the spent hops down to the compost
The 28L mark cannot be seen when sparging
Not entirely convinced that the correct temperature is being read post cooling - probably needs heat sink paste where the sensor is inserted

A really nice bit of equipment
    Review by Freddyon 15/07/2016
I bought this about 6 weeks ago. And it has really changed things, made everything much easier. Before I was doing the standard 3v AG brewing but it really was a hassle. Largely because I had such primitive equipment, so a brewday took literally a full on day. Now much easier, less time actually doing things, less time making sure temperature doesn't change etc. Much more hands off. Makes me much more adventurous in my recipes too - trying two new ones on Sunday

Ive had Issues, but a great product
    Review by Thomason 28/06/2016
If this review was based on just my most recent experiences with the Grainfather it would be 100% without a doubt. However my experiences have been somewhat difficult due to receiving a product that had a broken pump, and was then damaged in delivery, having been repaired. BrewUK and the supplier have both had excellent customer service and have been there to support each step of the way.

The product is excellent, I'm a huge fan of the counter flow chiller, which after a little experimentation means you can restrict the wort flow to syphon straight into the fermenter at 20 degrees! The hop blocker means you can add tons of whole leaf hops straight into the boil with no blockage issues, if anything it seems to help filter the wort. I'd recommend the sparge heater, its the perfect size and makes things that much easier. After a shaky start, I'm delighted with the product.

    The best purchase EVER!!
    Review by Richardon 01/06/2016
I had been moving through the usual process - kits, then extract and I thought things couldn't get any better with the extract brewing! Had some Christmas and Birthday cash stashed and decided to make the leap. I had one issue initially (unable to connect cooler to pump) this was quickly taken care of by Greg and Co! I then decided to jump into the deep end and create my own recipe - I can definitely say that this is the best beer I have produced (this was batch 42!).
    Get one they are brilliant!

    Awesome
    Review by 2wateraon 03/05/2016
Buy this! Don't think about it, just buy it! I am now an all grain brewer in one easy step. I bought the grainfather set it up on a Sunday afternoon and in a few hours had an awesome wort. I am now enjoying my 40 pints of top quality American wheat beer. Combine this with brewdog's recipes or Greg's Home Brew Beers ( try the Belgian beers, they are great) and you will be in heaven.
