Massive advance in my brewingMaybe a little early to review this as my first brew is only just underway, but none the less i am so impressed.
I will start with the chiller unit. Easy to unpack, leave to stand for 24 hours before even touching it.
All the connections are typical Grainfather.......they work perfectly! Very easy to set up. It comes with the glycol and the strainer for pouring it in to the tank. Just be aware some of the instructions are different to those on the official Grainfather YouTube videos (for example the ratio of glycol to water and the changing of temperature on the unit) i opted to follow the instructions to the letter in the manual and ignore the videos.
When you first turn it on after you have completed the priming instructions it will chug away until the temperature guage reads -4.5, then it will sit steady waiting for action.
The fermenter fits well (although i didnt tighten the nuts enough causing a slight leak from the chiller my fault, not the unit.)
I love the fact the lid has a seal and clamps so you get a really good airtight fit.
The digital display fits nicely and turns on when the chiller is on so there is only one power cord. Setting the temperature is easy, you select up or down until the target temperature is displayed and away you go, it is really as easy as that.
The chiller then reads the temperature and if it needs cooling it will start pumping, if it needs heating it will gently warm up. You can set the variance as well to within 0.1 of a degree so for me my brew is at 18 degrees and the chiller/heater is working at 17.6 to 18.4 degrees.
Because it comes with the jacket it really maintains the temperature so it is not constantly on. It pops on for a short while and then off again.
Crash cooling......it was 30 degrees yesterday, i used the Grainfather set up to cool my wort, but still had to dump in to the fermenter at 23 degrees. No drama, the chiller kicked in to life and in no more than 20 minutes if not less it was sat at 18 degrees, really efficient.
Woke up this morning to a perfect 18 degree fermenter with loads of activity in the airlock.
It is now all sat in the garage bubbling away, the only downside is that coming from having a Coopers fermenter with Krausen collar that allowed you to look inside, i cannot see the activity..........but that is a small price to pay for an amazing piece of kit.
At last i can brew all year round, i can brew lager, ale, in fact just about anything i want any time of the year.
Positives.......you can brew anything you want and hold the correct temperature, you can also programme the controller to ferment at stages which it will do automatically. The fermenter is lovely in design and easy to use, and the ability to dump the yeast and sediment mid brew is a nice touch.
Negatives.......it is costly, the dual valve tap is great, but you will need to buy silicon tubes to attach to them, and using a bottle wand will take a bit of figuring out.
All in all, i love it. I am currently doing the Amarillo single hop ale from Greg Hughes book, then i am going to try the Mexican Cerveza, then something else and something else and something else!
