Details

45 Ltr Insulated mash tun for steeping grain to produce sweet wort. With stainless steel 2 piece ball valve tap and false bottom Can mash up to 15 kgs of grain at once. Pre-heat the mash tun by filling it with hot water (not above 80c) and fit the lid. Meanwhile heat the mashing water to 75-80c (2.5 litres per kilo of grain). Empty the mash tun and refill it with the brewing water. Stir in the grains making sure there are no lumps and taking care that the strainer is not dislodged. When all the grains have been added check that the mash temperature is within the range 65-67c. Adjust if necessary with cold or boiling water. Fit the lid and leave undisturbed for 90 mins. Meanwhile heat 20 litres of water to 75c for sparging (based on 23 litre brew length, more needed for larger volumes). Position your boiler beneath the mash tap. Slowly open the tap and draw off 2 litres of wort. This cloudy wort should be returned to the top of the grain bed. Allow the sweet wort to flow slowly into the boiler. Adjust the tap to achieve a flow-rate of approximately half litre per minute. The boiler can be switched on after approximately 5 litres has been drawn off. Sparge (rinse) the grains with the water heated to 75c ensuring that the grains neither flood or dry out. Continue to sparge until 25-30 litres have been collected, then boil with the hops in the usual way. Approx internal dimensions : 36cm W x 36cm D x 38cm H

    Excellent Mash Tun
    Review by Roystonon 23/10/2017
A well made mash tun converted from a cooler box. Dropped only 0.5C over 90 minutes and has easily taken 20 lbs grain with no issue. The false bottom works well when drained using gravity and the grain is added so that none gets underneath. The ball valve tap works well once tightened up securely. Cleaning has been very easy.

The cooler box itself is fantastic, i barely lost half a degree of temperature during 75 minute mash. Handles have held up so far. 3 piece ball valve also fantastic. The False bottom kit however was missing pieces. I should have been sent 2 nuts to secure the false bottom to the elbow joint, however only one arrived, so the false bottom was useless as I had none spare laying around. The hose the false bottom used did not come with clamps, again, making it unusable.

Unfortunately I realized these 2 faults too late and already had 10-12 Kgs of grain in 64 C temp water.

To remedy the situation for future beers I shall just be using a bazooka style filter.

  • Well worth the money
    Review by Gon 25/06/2014
I've made far too many mash tuns in my time, and fancied letting someone else do the work this time, and I'm glad I did. The Delux is good quality, well put together, and works well. It doesn't lose much temperature (especially if you ignore some books' recommendations to check the temperature and stir the grain every 15 minutes!). I lost 2 degrees over a 90 minute mash, which I'm more than happy with.

Do bear in mind that this isn't playing any kids' games on the size front.
I tend to brew pale ales using grain bills of 6kg plus, so I'm pleased I went for this one, as the extra capacity is useful. However, if you tend to brew lower gravity ales you may find that your grain bed is going to be on the shallow side. (I find that six kilos of grain gives you a bed of around 5" depth.)

I'd give it the full fat five, but I've dropped a star as the spigot attached to the false bottom was completely blocked with crud (probably from the machining process), which I had to dig out with a sharp implement (a kebab skewer, if you're interested!)

I'm really glad that I filled the tun with water to check everything before starting a brew, and although it's unlikely that this is a common problem, I'd recommend doing the same if you decide to buy. Reaching the end of the mash and discovering that you can't get all that lovely wort out doesn't bear thinking about!

    Brilliant piece of kit
    Review by Hobsieon 28/04/2014
At first, I thought the price was an outrageous for what is essentially a glorified toolbox with a false bottom/mesh and a metal tap.

Then I had a look at what it would cost me to build this myself and suddenly realised that coolboxes are stupid expensive and actually it would cost me nearly the same + all the time and effort to put it together!

This works brilliantly. I just did my first 23litre batch with it and according to my thermometer the grain dropped in temperature by about .5 degrees over a 1 and a half hour period :) Estimated efficiency after taking a gravity measurement was around 85% which is waaaaay better than what i've been getting using a pot (i've basically been using my boil kettle as both a mash tun and for the boil until now).

The false bottom is really well made - although I wish they'd use better sticky labels as it took me a while and a lot of vinegar to remove the adhesive! When it came to draining/sparging it flowed REALLY nicely and drained through the 15litres in the mash tun + an extra 15litres in around 45min to an hour making sure my sparge water didn't drain into the mash tun too quickly.

Cleaning is really simple as well - the lid comes off easily which helps, and the false bottom and tube can detach relatively easily too. The plastic can easily scratch so I wouldn't use anything abrasive to clean it - although I'm not personally worried about any nasties getting stuck in scratches since it's pre boil anyway.

It is light weight, has moulded handles as well as the flip up ones (I would use the moulded handles to pick it up when full).

Absolutely deserves 5 star - this has and will continue to make my brewing life far simpler!

Just brewed an all grain belgian beer and only lost 1 degree of heat over a 70 minute mash..brilliant piece of kit, glad i bought the bigger size, the false bottom seems to work very well and the whole tun seems well built nice and sturdy, does a good job

    would completely recommend
    Review by elion 25/11/2012
I've just finished my mash using this mash tun and I can't rave about it enough.

Really feels well made, the handles feel solid and I wasn't scared lifting this full of wet grain.

Dead easy to clean and best of all, it only lost 1 degree during a 1 hour mash. I checked during and the bottom and sides were cool to the touch. Only the lid felt a tiny bit warm so I reckon that's the only place where heat is escaping.

I am glad I bought this.
