These kegs are normally used by pubs and restaurants to serve non-alcoholic fizzy drinks. These kegs are brand new. The beer is fully fermented and left to clear in a secondary fermenter. Co2 is then injected back into the beer to make it fizzy rather than naturally through secondary fermentation in the barrel. They are also made of stainless steel and therefore very hard wearing. There are advantages to these barrels, namely they are easier to fit in the fridge, they can be transported as there is no sediment and they can be fitted with bar style taps for home bars. Capacity is less than a standard barrel at 4 Gallons (approx) so you may need to bottle the balance of a 5 gallon brew.

These are the top of the line soda style keg on the market. They are made in Italy by AEB. They have been manufacturing these kegs in Italy since 1989 and their focus is on top notch quality. Here are some of the benefits and qualifications of these kegs:

304 Stainless Steel

NSF Approved for Beverage use.

Serial Numbers on each part with sanitary welds.

ISO 9000 MAA Approval by Coca Cola Manufactured by AEB since 1989 (23 years!)

Good place to start for Cornie newbie (me!)

I have brewed for ages but not used the cornie keg/CO2 method and found all I needed to get started here. Much better and less faff than numerous bottles. But I did add a tap to stop blow back into the regulator. Otherwise an excellent place to start forced carbonation. I may add a check valve too, not expensive compared to a new regulator.

Been meaning to invest in one of these for sometime now so eventually took the plunge last week. Picked up a bottle of CO2 at the weekend from a local supplier and got to work assembling and connecting everything. Despite there being no instructions whatsoever as to how to connect stuff up a close study of all the bits allows you to work it out. My only issue came with the regulator as it took a while to realise that the screw where you set the regulator needed to be totally unscrewed to the point of it seemingly being on the verge of falling out of the regulator.

My initial trial run in determining how to operate and carb up beer (and to check for leaks) came using 15 litres of water...maybe a waste of a bit of CO2 but far better that than wasting good beer if I found I'd totally screwed up connecting it all together!! Anyway...overnight I found I'd managed to get myself some nice carbonated tap water (Eau de Suffolk will be coming to a shop near you soon) that dispensed without issue.

Realising that I wasn't a total idiot and had managed to set it all up successfully I dumped the fizzy water (was joking about the Eau de Suffolk) and racked some German Exportlager that had been lagering at 4 degrees in a fridge for the last 6 weeks into the corny. Currently carbing up so will hopefully be drinkable in a few days time.

Already I can see that the corny will be a big (welcome) change from bottling not least for the time saved but also for the space saved....the corny footprint is much smaller than 40 bottles of beer and I'm already planning the purchase of a second keg!!
