Have used this product for three years and never had any infections. This is only my second bottle as it lasts so long. -
100%Superb product- very economical
Review by John on
You need very little of this to sanitise brewing equipment. It may be a tad pricier than cheaper powder sanitisers, but the clouds of irritant dust (that make you cough like crazy) that it doesn't throw up make it well worth it.
Because I have alkaline water I add a small sprinkle of citric acid to lower the pH before adding the StarSan. Works a treat!

One of if not THE best sanitiser on the market -
100%Great product
Review by Dan on
Just the best there is. Only needs a thin coating of the foam to sanitise within 60 seconds, and does not require rinsing. Don't fear the foam - once it's diluted in wort it even functions as a kind of yeast nutrient! Minerals in your water can cause it to go cloudy but as long as the pH is still below 3 it will still work. Check out the Basic Brewing Radio Podcast from March 29th 2007 for a really useful interview with the guy who invented the stuff for all the info you'll ever need to know about StarSan! -

Review by Chris on
Can't believe I haven't used this stuff sooner. I keep a spray bottle full to hand on brewdays, a quick spray and air dry on anything that you are about to use. How many times have you been in the situation where you are about to take a sample or put a piece of equipment in your beer and realize its not sterilised? No need to worry now, a quick spray with Star San then you're ready to go. -

I have used this consistently with good results. Initially experienced immediate "Clouding" due to hard water - now use Tesco's Ashbeck bottled water for mixing up large batches of Star-san which keeps for long periods.

Having starsan to hand is essential IMO.
We make up 5 litres at a time.
We measure with a ml syringe.
Yes, it might seem expensive, but a little goes a long, long way. Last bottle lasted over a year of near constant brewing. -

Starsan is the bees knees. No rinse, no messing, no odour and u only need to use about teaspoon of the stuff at a time. I keep a spray bottle of the diluted for multi purpose -

Easy to use and effective, it has worked for us every time. -
100%Efficient and effective
Review by David on
In its favour: it's much faster than many other sanitisers; it's easy to use; it is reasonably cheap because a little goes a long way (especially if you use a spray bottle with deionised water).
It isn't perfect because: you need a separate cleaner if you need to soak off debris; some water types will make a longer lasting mix than others; it will attack metals (like zinc) that react with acids (don't let it splash onto galvanised metals - they will quickly become ungalvanised producing hydrogen gas in the process).
Overall, its a useful product that makes brewing easier. If you bottle your brews, the time savings are really significant. -

Review by Ed on
Excellent product. Why use anything else? Why would you want to sanitise everything then have to rinse with unsanitised tap water? I have hard water so use double the amount and use straight away with no problems. Always keep a spray bottle made up with cheap distilled water from Halfords on hand. -
100%Really good product
Review by Cliffy on
Sanitisation is the key to successful brewing and this helps master this. Great product if you make sure you don't fear the foam!
I use it in a spray bottle and douse everything that needs cleaning in it having used odour/tasteless safe bleach spray beforehand to kill those bugs.
For those having trouble filling the chamber - take the top off the small chamber side, but not the large side and simply squeeze the bottle to get to the correct level - simple! there's also videos on line to show you how this strange product works.
Best thing to come out of the US since hamburgers and American IPA's! -
100%Excellent
Review by Gordon on
Has to be the best no rinse sanitiser out there. No odour, no issues. Seems rather counter intuitive to pour your beer into a bottle that has a little residue of what was strong acid in it, but all has been fine so far.
Only gripe I have is the 30ml measuring chamber on the bottle doesn't seem to work at all. To the extent that I cannot get it to fill no matter how the bottle is tipped around. No problem as I just pour it direct from the bottle, but it would be handy if the inbuilt measuring gauge did actually work. -
100%The best forget about the rest
Review by Steven on
No pugent smell, quick and easy, soak, drain and away you go . no need to worry about the foam which at first seems to go against the grain after a few uses it becomes a sign that all is clean and well. -
100%Saves time
Review by Steve on
I've always Use VWP and had no problem with it just the time and water you use, with SS you rinse and you are ready to bottle straight away. I normally wash in SS and let drip dry in a tub then fill them up you don't have to drip dry, I do it while getting everything sorted and you'll find a saying don't fear the foam. -
100%Easy sanitising
Review by Kickback on
Really convenient for sanitising equipment on brew day/bottling day and no need to rinse at the correct concentrations:
1 Fl oz: 5 US gal (which is what is says on the label)
or (in sensible units) 1.56ml / 1 litre (get a graduated syringe)
Search the forum for advice as to the right bottled water to use it with/whether your tap water will be ok.
I guess you never know for certain if it is working but none of my beer has gone bad so I assume it is.
Stick some in a spray bottle and everything is easily sanitised. -
80%Good, simple and with a little maths also a lot less wasteful
Review by RichM on
Easy to use and clearly does the job well (will find out once the beer is ready!). Its a trusted product.
My only gripe is that the instructions tell you how to make 5 gallons of the stuff. You wont always want to make 5 gallons if you need to rinse a few bits during your brewing process. With a bit of maths and a lot of converting it is possible to measure out the correct ratio of water for a teaspoon of the product at a time. Less wasteful and it will last a very long time! -

Seems to Just Work (TM) and obviates the need for endless rinsing to get rid of the chlorine taint of other sanitisers. -
100%Excellent
Review by ROBERT on
My water supply is soft to moderate and when mixed with Star San at 1.6 ml Star San to 1 litre of tap water it had a very slight white haze.
A check with the pH meter showed no problem at all with the pH.
I have also mixed it with deionised water intended for car batteries and electric irons. The mixture was gin clear using this.
As to how effective it is, it is a bit like "The Kings New Clothes"
I read on websites about how good it is at killing germs but as I cannot see the germs I have to believe that the stuff works and that they are dead.
Only time will tell.
It sure does save time on bottling day.
Don't forget that it is only a sanitiser and the bottles should already be clean of debris.
Best to keep on top of your empties by cleaning and sanitising as you drink them. That way you have a fresh start on bottling day.
For the average hombrewer a bottle will last years. -

100%Great no-rinse sanitiser
Review by Oliver on
When bottling or boxing up wine, I don't want to have to worry about if I've rinsed it enough to get all the chlorine out first and this solves that problem wonderfully. All my equipment is cleaned with VWP the day it's emptied however when it comes to use it after a month of sitting around this is the first choice.
Just make sure you remember that StarSan is a steriliser only and that you need to make sure you've given your equipment a good clean before you use it! -
100%newbie but seems good stuff
Review by Stephen on
A little goes a long way and the no ri we aspect really helps speed things up. I actually did my bottles to early, left some stars an in each, gave them a shoe on bottling day and away I went ! Stored some in old pop bottles too which makes it last even longer once made up and apparently its 'good' like that until it goes cloudy so will go even further! On that note, I live on the Fylde coast and was worried about water pH as mentioned in other reviews ... no cloudyness with water straight from the tap, happy days. -
100%A real upgrade
Review by John on
I strongly suspect that the only sanitizers available in the home brew sections of the various shops in town were entirely useless and I only managed to get 1 decent brew in the 3 I tried last year. I got my Starsan and it's an improvement even at the early stages. No more filling up containers with fuming liquid and then rinsing everything 5 times to get rid of the chemical smell before wondering just how clean it is as everything seems to fall apart. I have 3 new brews right now which are actually doing what the recipe said they would

100%A step up from chlorine-based sanitisers
Review by Tom on
I bought this after touring of the rinsing and waiting that I'd had to do with chlorine based sanitisers and wasn't disappointed. Although my local tap water is quite hard, I have found that the water that comes out of the dehumidifier's reservoir does the job nicely. I've only used it for sterilising my FV and barrels (along with odd bits of kit) but I have to say I'm not dreading the next bottling day nearly so much as I used to. -
100%Took 1.5 Hours off bottle washing and filling!
Review by Waving Daisey on
Used it for the first time on Saturday, I also bought a bottle rinser which really does speed things up. My PET bottle necks were a little to wide for the rinser so seeing another post on here I used a small funnel and drilled some drain holes in it. This stopped the water spurting everywhere. I can't believe just how little star san is required to make up the solution, 1.6ml per litre is amazing! I had to get a childs' medicine syringe from the chemist to get the dose correct. I also did a little test after reading comments on tap water turning the star san cloudy, possibly affecting it's effectiveness. My tap water is very hard, and even Aldi's finest bottled water went milky after a few hours. In the end I purchased 5L of distilled water from Halfords, £3.99 for 5L which should last me ages. The solution stays crystal clear now. I still plan to use steriliser for barrelling, but theres no way back for me now, I seen the future and I love it! Bottling was almost a pleasure! Admittedly I won't know if the bottles were cleaned correctly until I crack a few open in the coming weeks, but I don't have any real concerns. -
100%Tap water 2
Review by Insomniac on
Starsan really is a great product, it's odoless and tastless which puts it well above the chlorine based stuff I was using before. Worth noting that their Saniclean is just a low foaming version and is almost half the price, it can't be listed as a sanitiser in the US due to new legislation and licencing changes since Starsan was released, I will be giving that a go once my Starsan runs out.
The biggest problem I have with starsan however is that in my area it goes a milky white the second it hits the water making it's use rather limited. With distilled water I was able to keep it in a useable state for a good few months (!) for use on multiple batches and rackings without problem. But that does mean hunting down distilled water, which is a pain and adds to the overall cost of using it. -
100%Finally got hold of some StarSan in the UK!
Review by Josh on
It's sort-of hard to review a sanitiser given I can't actually tell if it's doing anything. So I'll assume it does.
The main benefit of this stuff is that you don't have to rinse it (it's tasteless and kills bacteria through acidity, and is neutralised by the beer) saving you a lot of time and making good sanitation a lot more achievable. The other benefit is it works with just 30 seconds of contact time.
It's concentrated stuff and you only need 6ml of this 500ml bottle to make up a gallon of solution. You won't need much more than a gallon or two since you can just swill it around and don't need to soak. Once diluted it seems safe to soak your hands in with no adverse effects.
As stated in another review, tap water seems fine (unless perhaps you want to store some solution for a while?). I got some cheap pH strips to check the solution was pH3, and tap water really doesn't seem to stray that far from neutral.
Definitely the only way to sanitise, and a 16oz bottle will probably last you years.

Review by beergut100 on
Starsan is a great product and actually acts as a yeast nutrient. Don't believe the hype about distilled water if you live in a soft water area though. Just get some litmus paper (dead cheap) and make sure that the PH is below 3. Where I live in Lancashire, the tap water is every bit as good as bottled or distilled to use with this product!
