    Restricts a vigorous boil

    Review by on

I bought this to use in my BM10 as there is nothing similar designed for the smaller unit. It fits nicely but just sticks out the top a little which is what I expected. I aways brew with leaf and would love not to cage them at all the but the BM10 outlet is so small it always gets blocked by hops, hence the need for the spider.

Fundamentally this unit completely restricts the BM from vigorously boiling, even when the boil temperature is set to 102C. The hops in the spider sit there like a porridge and with practically no agitation. As such since using this I have never reached the calculated Post Boil Volume or as a consequence to the lack of vigorous boil, the post boil calculated gravity. So I have decided to revert back to sterilising some pipe cleaners to poke up the tap to clear it when it gets blocked with hops. Far cheaper and a far more accurate brew is achieved.

    Expensive for what it is

    Review by on

This hop spider is well built and has the convenience of fitting down over the main centre spindle in the BM....its also just small enough so that the Speidel wort chiller can also stand in the BM (it fits neatly around the outside of the spider).

I do feel however that the 300 micron mesh is a bit fine and doesn't allow the boil to agitate the hops as much as I think they should be....especially if you are using a decent amount of hops.....my brew at the weekend had 75g of hops and there certainly was no freedom within the spider for the hops to circulate.

For what it is....its also damned expensive
