    Simple but Excellent

Bought one of these as an interim measure to allow me to ferment two batches at the same time whilst I raise the funds for a couple of Grainfather FV's. Also wanted something that would double up as a bottling bucket (albeit a rather expensive one) that would stop me messing about trying to tip the bucket to get the last of the beer out and also as a "bright tank" where beers could clear away from the yeast cake of the primary. Obviously the ease of keeping it clean was also a factor. The Anvil bucker Fermentor seemed to tick all my boxes.

Had to wait a while for them to arrive back in stock but the wait was worth it. Nice simple construction and the tap was easily assembled. The lid clamps are a tad on the flimsy side and the walls and lid are relatively thin (compared to a BrewBuilder conical which costs over twice as much)...however as long as it doesn't come in for rough treatment the build is more than adequate at the price.

The rotating racking arm will be a godsend to those who use this as a primary FV as the cone is very shallow and trub could build up to quite a level. I was a little concerned about the fact that the turning of the racking arm is done by turning the actual tap on the outside... my main worry being that in order to allow the tap to move you would have to tighten the tap to a level that may still allow leaks from the tap seal. My initial use of the Anvil as a bottling bucket put these fears to bed and I experienced no leaks at all while being able to freely rotate the racking arm....however I do still have long term concerns that eventually the nylon washer seals will wear with regular movement of the racking arm....still they should be really easy to replace if eventually leaks do occur through wear.

The Anvil also came with a rubber drilled bung and a bubbler airlock which seemed to fit nice and tightly in the hole in the lid without the edges of the hole cutting the bung to ribbons as I'd read in some online reviews (mainly American) of this product.

The FV also has volume markings embossed on the inside in litres and Gallons...these appear to be US gallons as the 20L mark corresponded with the 5.25 gallon mark. However, more importantly is the accuracy of the volume markings. My own calibration using a set of accurate post office floor scales and water revealed that the 15L mark corresponded with a real volume of 15.45L (so the marking is on the low side). By the time the FV was filled to the 23L mark the discrepancy was much narrower and the true volume was 23.15L. That sort of accuracy is fine by me.

All in all the Anvil is a basic but decent product that could be a perfect entry into the world of stainless FV's for many people.

I’ve used the fermentor a couple of times now. Best bit has to be the rotating nozzle! No more racking cane.
First time I used it was for laggering a Munich Helles which I filmed the process.
