Amazing pressured - pain to clean
    Review by Matthewon 18/08/2017
Holds pressure right down to the last pint. Wonderful. My only criticism: 2" lid? Makes it all but impossible to clean properly. Despite that, for the price it's excellent.

Good to start with but don't last
    Review by Chrison 07/08/2017
I've had 5 of these over the past 2 years - 3 of them are still in service. They are a good way to start your homebrewing journey because packaging the beer is a simple syphon away. However three problems with them:
    1. I find that they leak. Despite replacing the washers and greasing carefully, I've still had them leak.
    2. Two of mine have split - the beer didn't spoil but I had to significantly regas to drink. And of course at the end the barrel was done for.
    3. They can be difficult to clean. I have had to resort to bleach because it is difficult to get into the barrel.

If you are looking for a short term storage and a way to start, this is possibly a product for you. For something easier to clean, consider a King Keg where you can get your hand into the keg and clean it easily.

    Basic but does the job
    Review by Matthewon 14/03/2017
Basic stuff, no frills, but holds pressure perfectly. Pin valve works well. Would be nice to have two handles rather than the one, and the small entry makes it difficult to clean (I generally suffice with adding steriliser and shaking the heck out of it).

Great product - holds gas tight!
    Review by Maffon 16/02/2017
Excellent budget barrel. First 36-pint brew stored in it was gassed till the last couple of pints! That's some serious pressure. Not a hint of a leak. Only gripes are: small opening makes it hard to clean. Pressure pin difficult to screw onto.

Good keg, have to drink it fast though!
    Review by Willon 28/03/2016
Works well, ale matured in the barrel for three months, drank most of it at a party but the remainder went flat quickly. Might have to invest in a co2 injector!

Good Keg - better tap advised
    Review by sheltdon 11/05/2015
This is a good keg however I would advise a better tap (Drum Tap,Plastic With Back Nut - SKU5312 (although you don't need the back nut). The tap that it was supplied leaked under pressure.

    pressure leaks
    Review by bernon 04/09/2013
I would have given 5 stars as I have used these barrels for about
two and a half years, The leaks from taps etc,are easy plumbing
problems cured with care and attention. However over the last four
weeks all three barrels have sprung a leak on the seams.
    my thoughts,
Is it the hot weather, but it ,s a coolish room
Is it the extract brew kits I have started to use
cannot be , the 1st barrel was wherry
Or do they have a life span ?
I will still be using these barrels and extract brews the beers good!

    Barrels do the job
    Review by Pillion 11/06/2013
Up date on previous review by me. All barrels now seem fine. Replaced the tap on 4th barrel - no problems now. The problem with barrel 2 was too much Vaseline. Use only a smear otherwise the seal will be squashed out of place as mine was. All four are fine now.

Some good others not so good
    Review by Pillion 04/06/2013
I have now got 4 of these barrels.

1st - no pressure loss at all, to the extent that the bottom has blown out and still no pressure has released.
2nd - No leaks from tap, but leaking pressure from cap.
3rd - no problems that I am aware of at the moment, waiting to see what pressure I get.
4th - tap leaked but not from where it is screwed into the barrel, instead it is were you can turn the outlet to point down and that's just with filling up with water. Not got as far as testing for pressure.

Might need to send the 4th back!!!

    good product
    Review by Nigelon 15/11/2012
I bought this barrel for myself but found the tap leaked, that's why 4 stars and not 5.
After checking the reviews found out I wasn't the first person to have this problem. However easily solved - throw away the tap that comes with the barrel and buy a wide neck fermenter tap. Fit with some Vaseline and it won't leak .
Just bought one again for my son, with the replacement tap

    Just the ticket
    Review by Speccyon 09/11/2012
This arrived as part of my Woodefordes starter kit and it's been great.

I switched the cap for the C02 injector and the tap for a Little Bottler tap, primed the barrel with 85g of sugar boiled in a little water, syphoned in my beer, and then bottled half the beer through the tap, leaving the rest in there as I'd run out of bottles. Even though the barrel was only half full it pressured up well within a day or so. The bottom swelled out but I kind of found that reassuring rather than a problem. It's almost empty now but the beer's still gushing out healthily, even without me having used my CO2 cartridge. No leaks to report.

It does seem rather expensive for a big lump of plastic, but hopefully it'll last me for many years of brewing.

    Good, Just shy of perfect
    Review by A1EX8on 28/01/2012
Good keg, had a brew stored for 6 months with no problems. Bottom tap doesn't draw sediment provided you keep the CO2 levels topped up to stop the 'glug' you get when air is drawn back into the barrel through the tap.

Bottom did pop out during the 'clearing' phase due to a high build up of pressure, not sure what you need in order for the release valve to kick in. simply loosened the lid slightly to release a little excess pressure and all was good.

    No problems here
    Review by Markon 21/09/2011
    Pros:

    Simple to use
    Durable
    Easy to clean

    Cons:

    Expensive for what it is
Good for beers that require less carbonation but don't expect a fizzy larger or anything
Can be prone to leaks but plumbers tape and Vaseline are your friends

Cheaper and good for my current situation as a student with a bit of general know how it should be easy to avoid leaks.

    These barrels leak
    Review by Alon 30/08/2011
I've had one of these barrels that came with the woodefords starter kit. I've had constant problems with the barrel leaking beer from around the tap joint as soon as there's any pressure build up. Really annoying and a complete waste of good beer.

If you're looking for a new barrel I would spend a bit more and get one of better quality than this. It will save you time and money (and beer!) in the long run.

Response from BrewUK. - All barrels have problems and these are no more or less problematic than the more expensive ones. Try applying some vaseline to the thread of the tap and tightening which usually solves the problem. If you have beer in the barrel when this happens just lie the barrel on its back, release some pressure then follow instructions above. If this still doesn't solve the problem then we can get the barrel exchanged for you if you contact us.
