The first to be released is the Ruby Red Ale – A delicious tawny red ale with subtle malt undertones and a distinctive spicy hop aroma.

St. Peter’s Brewery is situated in beautiful unspoiled countryside in north Suffolk close to the historic market town of Bungay. St. Peter’s Hall is the centerpiece of the brewery site and dates from around 1280. In 1539 the East wing was added using materials from the nearby Flixton Nunnery, which was one of a dozen Monastic houses given to Cardinal Wolsey by King Henry VIII to finance the building of a school in Ipswich, Suffolk’s county town Then as today, Suffolk barley was carefully malted to brew beers and that tradition lives on today in the St Peter’s brewery.

Everything you need to brew 40 pints of good beer. The last time I did it was over 30 years ago and things have come on a lot - for the better.
Check the forum for hints and tips before you start as the instructions are somewhat vague. It is easy, however, the instructions seem to be written for brewers not novices.
Be patient, leave in fermenter for 14 days, this allows beer to clear and the yeast will have definitely done its job, this will also help conditioning stage and help clear your beer.
You will be adding and improving to your kit so check out everything you think you need on the forum before buying. The guys on the forum are brilliant.

I bought this as a present for my husband. He's enjoying real ale so brewing his own seemed like a natural next step.

Very good product and my first brew is under way. I felt like a bit of a prune when i saw you can get free delivery just by buying something else (to bring it over the £65 mark) so i would recommend maybe getting some bottles, a 2nd kit, or even something cheap like a better airlock (Posted on 04/09/2013)

  8. Comprehensive! Review by Dan
    Rating

Picked this up with the St Peters Golden Ale kit as my first foray into home-brewing: got plans to get onto extract-brewing and start formulating my own creations!

Everything's included to get started, though I did find the instructions a little vague in places. Had no idea how to use the included airlock until I watched a video on YouTube.

Looking forward to enjoying my first pint in about a week's time! (Posted on 03/08/2013)

  9. Great first step into home brewing Review by Zack

The kit has everything you need to get you up and running. I'd echo the comments on instructions needing improving, but brewuk has a great forum that'll answer any questions you have and also some helpful tips from more seasoned brewers on how long to ferment vs the general product instructions. (Posted on 15/07/2013)

  10. Great kit overall but a few duff parts Review by Richard
    Rating

Bought this kit for my first go at home brewing. Overall I would say it is great, and I would recommend it for any first time brewers, but a few points to make it even better...

    1. The included hydrometer is not very good - get the one BrewUK supply separately, it's much better. Also buy a trial jar.

    2. The included spoon is a bit naff (which I suspected from the photo) and bought a stainless steel one which is top notch.

    3. I did my first brew in spring when it was cold, so I bought a brew belt - well worth it, but don't let the fermentation vessel get too hot. Although the belts are not thermostatic, you can control the temperature of the FV by how far up the FV you put the belt.

    4. As others have commented, the instructions could be better and I spent a while on the Internet looking for advice. But this is actually a good thing, as you will think about other ways of doing things and learn in the process.

Would I recommend this - a definite yes. Once you have produced a drinkable beer this easily you will want to try the next step, extract brewing, and after just one "kit brew" that is what I have done. All the equipment supplied will be good for that.

Finally, service from BrewUK was A1.

  11. Excellent kit for a first time homebrewer Review by Norton
    Rating

Full-featured & fully equipped to get you started first time brewing. The instructions are simple and easy to follow. I had my all fermenting in a matter of hours. man.
Brew UK and St Peter's have made me a happy man. (Posted on 16/05/2013)

  12. Good but some parts not so good... Review by Richard
    Rating

I bought this kit for my first ever attempt at brewing. It produced a very pleasant pint so I have no complaints about that, but it's worth pointing out a few things.

    1. I think it's worth getting a brew belt if you are fermenting somewhere a bit on the cold side.

    2. If you are using the keg for the secondary fermentation rather than bottling, buy some extra CO2 cartridges, I have used three already and the keg is still over half full.

    3. The included hydrometer is poor - get a Stephenson and Reeves one (available from BrewUK) and a trial jar.

    4. The instructions could be better, and as someone has commented, the kit instructions and the St. Peter's instructions do contradict each other a bit. But don't worry, I just went for between the two and it turned out OK. And forums are your friend!

    5. Order a few extra grommets as the included one fell to bits when I tried to remove it.

    6. I ordered a bubbler airlock as I read they are better and only cost a couple of pounds.

If that all sounds very negative it isn't meant to, I am only pointing out the shortcomings of the kit. Now on to the positives!

Yes it made a very acceptable beer and after a few goes will have more than paid for itself. It's a rewarding feeling to be drinking something you have made yourself which tastes good, and I am sure that with experience things will only get better.

Service from BrewUK was really good, the included hydrometer leaked and they sent me a (better) replacement FOC.

If you are thinking about having a go at making your own beer, this is a great place to start. Good luck! (Posted on 20/04/2013)

  13. Great value Review by Thomas
    Rating

Take advantage of free delivery by ordering a few kits at the same time, as well as any other equipment you need. My first brew finished primary fermentation in 3 days, cleared in next 2 and was bottled on day 5. Should be left for 14 days, but I had a stable 26 C temperature for primary, dropped to 22 C for secondary in glass bottles, then temperature reduced to 15 C for 14 days conditioning. My next kit will go in pressure barrel. Best to follow excellent advice in forums and you will enjoy excellent ales in 28 days try one at 14 days, 21 days and you will taste the improvement over time. (Posted on 12/04/2013)

  14. Excellent starter kit Review by Andrew
    Rating

As a complete novice to home brewing, this provides an excellent starter kit to get me going. Quality seems pretty reasonable. As others have said, the included instructions are not the clearest, and the instructions with the microbrewery didn't always agree with the instructions on the box of the St Peter's beer kit. There is plenty of excellent advice here on the forum and elsewhere on the internet so this is not a major problem.

My kit was missing a part. This was not BrewUK's fault as they don't assemble the kits. When I contacted them they immediately put the missing part in the post to me. Excellent service!

After just over a week fermenting, the beer is nearly ready to barrel and already tastes rather good. Looking forward to trying it after proper conditioning.

As I'm brewing in my cellar at a constant 13 degC I also bought a brew belt to maintain the temperature, but other than that the kit had everything I needed to get started. (Posted on 20/03/2013)

  16. Great product - easy to make good beer Review by Mark
    Rating

I hadn't made my own beer for 20-odd years, so I chose this kit after reading the reviews. It's easy to make, I followed the instructions closely, and produced some really good beer that reminds me of Fuller's London Pride. To make sure the temperature was high enough in January I also bought a brew belt. Definitely worth the investment. Also a couple of extra thermometers, which are necessary, though difficult to read.
As I've still got my old pressure barrel in the loft I'm just about to buy my next beer kit and make my next brew. (Posted on 11/02/2013)

  22. A good starter set for noobs. Review by snes
    Rating

Everything you want to get started with home beer brewing. The fermentation vessel and barrel are of good quality, the extra bits such as thermometer, hydrometer, syphon tube etc are all of adequate quality to enable you to do the job. An added bonus was allowing you to choose from a variety of beer kits - I went for St Peter's Ruby Red - instead of just the one variety advertised on the box.
If the brew goes well, you can reuse all the items as they are of perfectly acceptable quality, or you can upgrade. Its up to you!
So, well done BrewUK - you made the purchase and process of my first ever home brew as easy and painless as possible. Many thanks! (Posted on 05/12/2012)

  23. Not so great brewing kit Review by oscarleo
    Rating

As a complete novice to the art of wine and beer making, I am a little bit surprised of the 5 star ratings that are showing here. I bought this kit purely because it was advertised as a wine maker as well as beer - yet there there are no instructions for wine making. Which brings me onto the poor instructions (which were probably written by an expert who has long forgotten the difficulties that ensue when making your very first brew!).

The importance of making sure everything is sterilised cannot be understated, and neither can the fact (I have since discovered by doing some research) that consistency in temperature for your brew is also vitally important. Yet when selling to nations like the UK, the thought of including tips on how to keep your brew warm enough to maintain the temperatures needed - seem not to have been included in the instructions. I wouldn't expect a brew belt included in the kit, but maybe a special offer in which to buy one before I realised that when no ones home in the house during the day and the heating is not on - the temperature of the beer cannot be maintained!

Having a stick on temperature gauge for the fermenter as well as the keg should also have been included (still waiting for one to come in the post). What about instructions when to use the hydrometer? I never used this when I was supposed to because the instructions didn't say!

As my brew stagnated for some time without the airlock bubbling for some time before I got my brew belt, and the temperature of my keg of beer is unknown (yes I have got my brew belt on to roughly maintain the 18-20 degrees) - I'm not sure if this brew is going to be any good at all.

Be advised, unless you've got a nice warm cupboard in the house with room for a fermenting bin/keg that will maintain a consistent temperature - get yourself a brew belt and an extra thermometer!

Response from BrewUK - thanks for the feedback. The kit is able to be used to make wine but as its a beer starter set we do not include wine instructions but if you buy a wine ingredients kit they will include all the instructions you require.

With regards to heating, the temp range is 18-22 and so long as you do not exceed this range for very long the beer will be fine. Most houses run at around this range so a brew belt is not required but if your house is very cold then perhaps additional heating may be required but this is not normal for most customers. Great kit with everything you need to make an amazing pint. Many years ago I used beer kits from Boots, they were ok, but certainly 'homebrew'. My home brewed St Peters beer beats many a pint at my local and has been appreciated by friends and family. If you have been away from brewing for a while do try this kit. Just ordered a Woodfords kit and St Peters Ruby which should be great for Christmas. Rather crazily have also ordered the cheese kit - we shall see how that turns out! (Posted on 31/10/2012)

  26. Good starter pack Review by BrewCooatbridge
    Rating

This is a great way to start out with brewing, I like how the St. Peters kit has simplified instructions although a little more info would be required for someone who is brand new to brewing ie. desired hydrometer readings(and when to take them), and some science would boost the experience(sugar, starch, protein) I would recomend some extra equipment as well, a floating thermometer as the stick on isnt great, the siphon isn't brilliant either. A wine thief is a good idea and remember to buy vaseline for the keg. Alternative bottling instructions would be nice also. Overall i'm really happy with the kit as the beer turned out great. Cheers... (Posted on 11/10/2012)

  27. Very effective but instructions leave a lot to imagination Review by Luke
    Rating

Made my first batch of St. Peters IPA in the last couple of weeks. end result has been fantastic. A lovely brew with good flavours and colour. The kit has everything you need but the instructions are a little woolly in places. I had to figure out for myself what the airlock was for and I still haven't gotten to the bottom of the red plastic thing with the metal weight. Still the beer hasn't suffered as a result. The kit is robust and works well.

A great beginners kit with more than you'll ever need to start brewing. Highly recommended, I'm thrilled with it. (Posted on 09/10/2012)

For years I thought about brewing my own beer. When I finally made the decision I found brewuk with this kit which seemed to be a good choice for a starter.
It's as simple as it says on the instructions. The beer quality is good and pouring some pints for my mates only resulted in my stock getting very low quickly :-)
Next plan is to use ingredients, one level up, and see if I still can brew a decent beer. (Posted on 06/08/2012)

After browsing several home brew web sites I decided that Brewuk.co.uk looked to have everything that I could need to start home brewing again. The site is informative, well laid out and the forum looks interesting as well. I ordered my starter kit on Saturday evening and all was delivered on Tuesday afternoon, decent kit as well. I had several e mails from brew uk to keep me informed with the option of being able to track my order as well. Excellent service and I would use brew uk again without doubt. All I need to do now is get brewing, will let you know how I get on, having read the instructions it looks fool proof. Here's to some great home brews. (Posted on 25/07/2012)

Kit arrived very promptly in a perfectly packaged box.

There are enough instructions contained within the box to get you up to speed quickly and have you mixing up a batch of beer in no time. I've gone from a complete novice to a complete novice with some beer fermenting in next to no time!

I guess the proof is in the pudding, or in this case the beer, which all being well should be as easy drinking as it was creating. (Posted on 27/06/2012)

This kit amazingly arrived on the Saturday of Bank holiday weekend, despite having ordered it a mere 2 days before hand. The equipment seems well made and solid and the kit contains everything you need to brew the beer supplied except for a small amount of sugar for conditioning. I asked a fair few questions before and after purchasing the product, and recieved prompt, accurate, polite replies to all of my queries. Having made beer a few times some number of years ago, I had some limited experience of brewing, but found the instructions easy to follow and we now have 40 pints of Ruby Ale conditioning in the cupboard. Happy Days! (Posted on 11/06/2012)

Received my Microbrewery this week and my first brew is fermenting away as I write this. Very easy to use and set up. I was a bit concerned with the air lock (two piece type) at first, as it didn't seem to be showing any signs of CO2, but soon realised that you don't need to fill it with much water. Made 40 pints of Woodfords Wherry using the kit a couple of months ago. The barrel has been sitting in my garage for about 6 weeks and tried a pint recently, was very impressed with the taste. A bit like Old Speckled Hen, lovely colour. Not like the homebrew of my student days, it could pass as a shop-bought ale and was easy to make. I'm making my next batch of beer, Ruby Red ale this time. Could get hooked on this homebrewing... (Posted on 15/05/2012)

Bought the starter kit with barrel and I have to say that the barrel is the best bit of the kit. Because of the pressure in the barrel the beer dispenses with a great creamy head - just like a pub. But turn the tap slowly or you might end up showering in the beer. Am looking forward to the next brew. (Posted on 07/05/2012)

An excellent piece of kit, very successful first attempt and brewing beer. Excellent taste, good clarity, you couldn't buy a better beer!

TIP: make sure you keep things clean - this is extremely important! I spend more time cleaning than actually making the brew!

Since visiting an up-and-coming brewery in the local area it was interesting to see them using parts of this equipment to trial new beers they are making.

A must buy for home brewers! (Posted on 17/04/2012)

Everything you need to produce beer from a barrel, however should you wish to bottle your brew you will need a few extras:- Bottles, Caps, Bottle capper, bottle filler, approriate attachments to fit bottle filler to barrel or FV, and finally between 60g and 100g of corn sugar for priming. Brewed my first beer with this microbrewery at the weekend. I did an extract recipe (not the kit that comes with this) and had lots of fun doing so! Pretty much everything you need to get you going, all solid and well made. (Posted on 26/03/2012)

Got one of these last xmas and have brewed a few woodfordes wherry kits - 2 youngs wine kits and some rather strong barley wine - just put a Tom Caxons bitter into the pressure barrel - feel i need another one of these kits to get two on the go at once - defiantly better from a pressure barrel than bottles :D

going to try the highly rated amarillo kit next :D (Posted on 14/11/2011)

    Hi,
fairly new to home brew, but this was stunning, even a few of mates that brew were stunned. I bottled it and served slightly cold.
Nice with curries and savoury food/
I am getting 3 more kits (Posted on 31/08/2010)

Cant believe how much fun it was to make beer! I put the bucket in the bathroom as it was exactly the right temperature, and loved watching it all gently bubble. The first pint was delicious but the subsequent ones only got better and better. It tasted great, was really clear, but the only problem was... it was all gone too quickly!

I have ordered the John Bull Country Cider, and the Sauvignon Blanc Wine Kit. I've also noticed that Brew UK do an Irish Cream that tastes like Balieys. Im only dipping my toe in the wine making with the 6 bottle kit, but here is the clever part... the wine kit can also be used for the Baileys. Beware, these kits can lead you on a roll!

To be honest, I cant wait for the next delivery. (Posted on 16/03/2010)

if you like cooking and enjoy your beer then brewing is for you. I bought this in November after a weekend article in The Guardian and I'm hooked.
The first batch - a Norfolk Wherry - was so good that it convinced two of my friends to give it a go! Now we're trading tips, recipes and brews! It's also given me a much broader understanding of beer and production.
BTW, all the kit is high quality and a great price. Enjoy! (Posted on 09/01/2010)
