Smack the yeast pack. Sterilise everything!!!. Measure 100g dried malt extract and 1 litre of water. Heat the water and add the DME just before the water comes to the boil, then boil for 20 minutes stirring continuously. Cool as quickly as you can to 20C and pour wort into a demijohn then add the yeast. Fit airlock and give it a good swirl to aerate. Let it ferment out but every time you pass by, give it a swirl. When its finished fermenting let the yeast settle out and just before you pitch drain off most of the wort.
Simples, hope that helps.

It should ferment out in 2 to 3 days, your week old starter will be fine. If you're unsure pour a little wort off to smell an taste.
I think I remember reading in my Wheeler book commercial breweries pitch at the equivalent of 100g per 25 litres. You won't need that much, I think a 1 litre starter should be plenty, especially 1056 as its quite vigorous.
You could make a 2 litre starter pitch a litre and split the rest for future use.
Just keep everything completely clean and sterile.

Another good resource on starters is mrmalty's website (google search - mr malty) as it will tell you what volume is needed for a prompt, good fermentation.
