bantzWhere to put my barrel now?

1 year ago | bantz (Member)

Hi all, I have had my barrel at 20-22 for the past 5 days since filling it and priming it, I am now thinking i need to condition it at around 12 degrees for a few weeks, is this the right approach? I was thinking of putting it in my garage but it is external to the house and im pretty sure there are mice in there and i dont want them to chew threw the barrel after my precious ale. I have a fridge in there at about 5 degrees, is this too cold for the barrel to go in?

thanks

What type of barrel you got there bantz, and more importantly, how big are the mice...

Bantz, not sure the mice will be after your beer. If they did manage to chew through the pressure barrel then would be in for a very messy surprise. There would be beer covered mice splattered all over your garage. You'd just need an alcoholic cat and you'd be sorted.

I keep my barrels in the garage without any problems. I think I keep my mice in there too....

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

Grarge sounds fine to me. If you want to use your fridge (and its not full of other non-important stuff - like food!) then why not put it on a plug timer and let it come on for 15min every hour, then see what the temp is like?

Its the budget barrel that comes with the Mirobrewery set from the brew uk shop. Not too keen havin the little blighters sippin away at me drippy tap ;-).
Is 6 degrees too cold to condition in then? it would be safe in the fridge (which has to stay on full time because of the freezer contents.
I like my ale quite cold anyway. Other than that its at 18 under the stairs! Would that be okay to help clear and condition it?

I dont see why it would be a problem, the colder it is I suppose the faster the yeast would drop. (someone correct me?????).
