User has not uploaded an avatarWhen to add Campden tablet

10 months ago | WolvoMark (Member)

Hi all.

I'm new to brewing and new to this forum (or any forum for that matter!), so apologies if this seems a bit of a daft question.

I am about to start my first brew - I'm using the Woodfordes microbrewery/Wherry kit.
I've looked at all the great advice on this forum and I think I'm OK on most things , but the one thing I'm confused with is at what point to add a campden tablet to the water (my tap water has a strong smell of chlorine).

Should I measure the full 40 pints of water that I am going to use into a seperate sterile container (say, another fermenting bucket), and dissolve the tablet in that before I start?

Or can I empty the cans of wort and mix with boiling/cold water and dissolve the tablet in the mixture before I add the yeast?

Or maybe dissolve the tablet in a seperate jug of boiling water (say a pint) and pour that in the mix before adding the yeast?

Or is it something different altogether?

Oh and one last thing. I'm probably going to filter the tap water with a jug filter, should I sanitise the jug, or is that overkill?

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thanks.

Mark.

Just add the crushed tablet to your starting water and take your boil volume from that.

    Hi Mark
From where i am from the water is hard.
I to use a filter jug to filter the water and because i use this i do not use the camden tablets to treat the water as i find the jug is efficient enough treating the water.
As for sterilizing the jug i as a precaution boil a kettle and pour it inside and extra care at the spout.

There was a topic on water filtration a little while ago and a few of us bought the aquagem (i think its called) inline filter from b&q for about a tenner. This is basically the same as the jug filters but its inline so you can connect it to a tap and just run it into the boiler/hte etc etc. Its a carbon filter and should get rid of that chloramine taste. I got one and will be using it for my next brew rather than campden tabs.

The inline filter looks a great idea. Would save a lot of time compared to filtering 23 litres of water through a jug! Will definately check that out. Thanks Nath.

Nath just seen the filter at bq for £9.98 but i would have to buy the tap for nearly £37 and seems alot of expense. Think i will just measure my water through a filter jug and have it ready in a spare FV so can continue to add all at once. Would sooner put me hard earned to the heat regulator ready for winter.

Dont need to buy the tap mate, just a hoselock fitting to a tap then some pipe connected to the unit - no tap all good for £9.98 and its supposed to last ages!
