To Fin or Not to Fin?!
Hey Guys,
Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on beer finings...
What gives the best results, and at what stage in the process should your finings be added?
Thanks,
Tayport

I just use finings in the boil. Either Protofloc or Irish Moss. I get lots of cold break and most of it stays in the boiler when I drain it. I don't use any finings in the fermenter or barrel/bottle. Too much hassle and the beer's clear enough without.
If it's wine you're asking about then I'm clueless!

I use Irish moss at the end of the boil and patience usually, but have added Isinglass to the secondary for a few days in my last two brews. It cleans it up beautifully, but I worry about having enough yeast activity left for the bottle fermentation. Seems o.k, but I'm also experimenting with bottling at 1012-1014 so as to leave out the priming sugar and achieve natural condition. I need to run the two experiments separately really.
