User has not uploaded an avatarThunderbolt - Low OG

1 year ago | AndrewB (Member)

My first attempt at an extract brew after doing about a dozen standard kits.

I started off a brew of Thunderbolt at the weekend, following the instructions to the letter. When I measured the OG the reading was only 1035 rather than the expected 1043. The temperature of the wort was still about 30C at this point, would this account for the OG being this low?

The fermentation took off like a rocket, after 12 hours there was a huge head of foam on the brew and the air lock was going crazy. It has settled down a lot now.

    Hi Andrew,

Yes, you need to adjust the hydrometer reading to allow for warmer temps as the liquid will be thinner when warm. Assuming your hydrometer is calibrated at 15c then this would give you a reading of 1039 which is nearer to where you should be.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.
    Fermenting:
    Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
    Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

Thanks Greg, I thought the temperature might be the problem, I should have realised this at the time. Being my first extract brew I'm not used to having to wait for the liquid to cool down.

Don't worry it about. It won't effect the outcome of the brew.
