1 year ago | Lewis (Member)

Think I may have cut the fermentation short thanks to my epic lack of patience! Would this have anything to do with the fact that the beers quite thick?

Planning: US(ish)Style With German Carafa
Fermenting: Nawt.
Conditioning:First Ginger Beer.
Drinking: Way To Amarillo.

I found my first wherry a bit thick at first, but fear not - it'll be fine in the end!

Thick beer sounds weird! Did you lower the total volume at all?

Was a Woodfordes norfolk nog kit. Left the volume the same as what it said. Fermented for 4 days, left in a pressure barrel for 2 days then bottled, Been in bottles for six weeks now.

I think it's basically due to an oily substance that floats on the surface, making the liquid appear a bit thick and sort of syrupy... can't for the life of me remember why it appears sometimes, maybe something to do with the malt perhaps??

did you take hydrometer readings on that? It sounds like it fermented very quickly.

I will try to prevent this sounding perverted.

How does it feel between finger and thumb? Oily/soapy/watery? Is there much haze?

    Fermenting: Damson pale
    Conditioning: Morello Cherry Lambic 2
Drinking: Schneider Weisse Tap 7 clone, Morello Cherry Lambic 1, Rauchbier

Yes, kept a pretty good record. Was in barrel for 7 days looking back not 2. I guess it feels like beer would looks like the same consistency as watered down washing up liquid, if that even makes sense! Think I'm going to leave my Amarillo in the FV for a couple of days extra, just to be sure.

    Sunday, 6 February 2011 - Started. Original Gravity: 1.035

This is the description of Woodforde's Nog:

Smooth, rich and rounded ‘Old Ale’ with a velvety texture and hints of chocolate, treacle and liquorice

So it may supposed to be, "thick".

I think it's basically due to an oily substance that floats on the surface, making the liquid appear a bit thick and sort of syrupy... can't for the life of me remember why it appears sometimes, maybe something to do with the malt perhaps??

That sounds like the hop oils floating on the top of the beer when it's in the FV. That tends to disappear when the beer's bottled/kegs and conditioned.
