OK - I'm trying one last time to see if I can post this - have no idea what was stopping me post it... maybe its the mention of the copyright police..?

    See post below

EDIT: Just weird and weirder. OK, I'm going to try to post in stages as edits and see what happens..

Apologies if the copyright police come knocking (and if they do, tell them I'm only reproducing this in the interest of science - which is ok if there's an R in the month), but... I was just having a look at the sample recipes in BeerSmith, which I've never really done before.

So.. this bloke has arrived at this little number. He's messed up the profile as he says its a dopplebock but has used an IPA profile. But... and this am the hugest but, check out the IBUs on it. I have to admit I'm tempted - or at least to aim for something on the general wicket (wanted to say ball-park, but I'm firmly rooted to this side of the pond). I don't think I'd use the range of hops (how would I know what flavor came from what and all that) but some of those nice NZ ones could be employed. What do you think.. would the depth of maltiness (that's not in my dictionary and it should be) take an edge of a bitterness that's likely to pick you up and slap you around a bit? (And 46% efficiency too.... just a real odd one this!)

The efficiency is a bit odd, maybe he lives in an extremely hot/cold (deletes as appropriate) country and aslo uses 30 1ltr plastic kettles.

    As for the ibu's - I have seen higher(!) It was a 400ibu proper ols IPA, I will see if I can fish out the address, he made it with a $h*t load of goldings, it looked u n b e l i e v a b l e.

8 and a half k of malt, looks like he may have judged it. Why not mess around (with consent of course!) with the efficiency to see what the ibu's come out at.

Drinkin' - nowt, it's all gone

Good plan! Greg inspired me with his plans to go higher with the IBUs!

I know what ya mean, my 60 ibu (apparently) ipa is a real nice drink and I rekon most beers I do will be around the 40+ mark now.

Saying that I dont think my IPA is 60 ibu, I think that maybe the magnum I used isnt quite the 14% aa stated. Still, its a really good choice for bittnerness, real clean.

Don't do it. Ask Varnish about high IBU beers. He made a 120 and ended up binning it. If you are going to venture above 80 then I would get most from late hop additions as these aren't as harse but I think 80ibu will be pushing things unless you have a very high ABV.

I think that recipe is not finished. I also can't see the point of using multiple hops in the kettle, you may as well use a high alpha and use the other stuff later on.

I'm trying to stay off the beer today but you two are making my thirsty!

OK .. so how did you know I'd been drinking? Missus and the kids are away for the afternoon and won't be home 'til late .... I just couldn't help it.

Yes.. you're right. I think your idea of hitting the 70 mark is about right - 80 at a push.

If you have all the new AG profiles added to BeerSmith, you'll see this comment at the end of the recipe (he calls it FPA - I wonder what the 'F' stands for?):

'This is a not to style beer. The grain bill is a Dopplebock grain bill. This gives it a tremendous amount of malt to offset an absolutely insane amount of hops. Everyone says this is an awesome brew.'

well .. other than a decent amount of ingredients ... a brewday, and those are scarce!

And.... with the hassle I had on friday with the burnt hops, I think I may play safer next time :o)

I think I'd rather trust you than Mr Insane hops. Give more time - - - maybe one day :o)

I know what you mean. Not worth the risk unless you have plenty of supplies in.

    8 grains and 5 hops?!?
I think you could stream line that a little and apply your brew house efficency.

That wouldn't be an american recipe would it?
They seem to love lots of different grains and also seem to be in love with high IBU IPA's.

I gave a bottle of that 120IBU IPA to a friend the other day.
    He said he hated it.
"That lager you gave me was bloody awful" was actually what he said.
After I stopped laughing I asked:
    "Was it bitter?"

:o) Yes indeed ... from all the way across the pond and all that.

So you didn't tip the beer then?

Yes, I think I'll aim for somewhere less that both yours and the recipe. Now if I can only get the green light for another brewday!
