Boil Size: 35.00 L
Estimated OG: 1.061 SG
Estimated Color: 16.0 EBC
Estimated IBU: 50.0 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 70.00 %

30.00 gm Brewer's Gold [8.40 %] (20 min) Hops 14.3 IBU
34.00 gm Cascade (NZ) [7.60 %] (5 min) Hops 4.8 IBU
0.61 gm Irish Moss (Boil 15.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04) Yeast-Ale

Mash Schedule: Single Infusion, Light Body, Batch Sparge

----------------------------
Single Infusion, Light Body, Batch Sparge
Step Time Name Description Step Temp
75 min Mash In Add 16.50 L of water at 69.0 C 63.0 C

I had to change the original recipe as I did not have enough Pilgrim (need 25g had 12g) so I added 5g on each brewers gold addition. This has made the ibus about 10 less but thats cool as my last beer was a 60ibu one.

Water treatments on this one for a dry pale ale style and thats about it really, dunno what it will turn out like its just to use up some bits n bobs I had lying around.

Conditionin'/Drinkin' - OPA Pale
Conditionin' - LEB Pale
Conditionin' - Thwaits Nutty Black
Plannin' - A user upper!

This summer is rapidly taking on the look of the last one.

Never mind nath, grit your teeth, put on your oilskins and brew that beer! Hope you have a great day despite the rain!

I dunno, I also lost my piece of tubing from my mash tun so I had to get another piece, but now the mash is on and im gonna do another batch sparge to see if I can get any more effeciency out of it (hit 70% last time). I think I will drain the first lot off, then put 7 ltr of water in, stir, leave for 20 mins, drain and then do the same again.

Oh and the mash was at 65c not 63c but thats fine.

That's a good idea nath. I'm going to try splitting the sparge water equally in two this time and doing 2 x 20 min sparges.

Right done that and the first lot of hops are in. So the sparging, here it goes:-

    33 ltr water, 6.38kg grain

    16 ltr in mash

    8.5 ltr sparge x 2

result was 27 ltr wort at 1.062

Dunno what effeciency I have, but I will try to sort it out when I see how much I have at the end and how much I need to top up by (I presume I will!)

Right, all done piccys to follow tonight/tomorrow.

33 ltrs water and I ended up with 21 (3 of which was extra water!)

    WHERE DID IT ALL GO?!?!?!?!?!

21 ltr at 1.063 should be around 6.4%

Hey that's not bad nath .. well done. I always lose so much to the hops, was looking at the possibility of using pellets but will need to make big modifications to my hop strainer.

Good work nath, looking forward to the pics!

Righty, the only difference is 1 put the cascade in at 2 mins rather than 5 and then let the whole lot steep for about 60 mins.

Hops all lines up ready, with Irish Moss and me chiller

    2nd runnings

    Technical - I know!

Spent grainage - Does anyone squash the grain to make sure sugary goodness is out? Hmmm

Thats what I got from the original 33 ltrs

Breakage and just coming to the boil

Shes a beast on a full boile (2 elements)

    Zoomed out view!

1 element (what I use when a rolling boil is reached) and my finger!

Some hops goin' in the brew (20mins brewers gold)

    Bit of the ol' irish

    2 mins cascade hops

Splishy sploshy - nice and airy!

Starting to see the break, and a few minutes later she was emptied of all her juices!

And thats that folks. Now we play the waiting game! The only thing I had to do was add 3 ltr of water (21 ltr total) to make it to proper gravity, infact i should have put in 4 so my effiency is about 69% with batch sparging. Just cant seem to make it any higher so I may go back to fly sparging.

That boiler kicks ass. Even with Bill&Ben safety shields.

Very reassuring seeing pics like these. Nice one for sharing.

PS - what sort of strainer have you got on the boiler, and how long did it take to empty into the FV?

Planning - To make more beer

    Fantastic Nath!

Don't squeeze the grain though .. you'll squeeze out all sorts of nasties along with the good stuff.

Love that boil and a huge amount of break material. Nice!

I have never squeezed but it annoys me how much water must be left over in them grains.

I may dry hop this one a little, can I do this in primary after a week for around 4 days? I cant be bothered to slap it in a secondary.

Yeah, that will be fine. Just stick them in a sterilised muslin bag with something to weight them down and chuck them in.

Can I not just chuck em in? Wouldnt you get a taste with whatever else you put in there to weigh (and the bag itself)?

Not sure, never done it before but was planning to use a glass marble to weigh it down and I don't think the muslin bag will give off a taste.

You can chuck them in but you will then need to strain the beer when you put it in the keg as the hops will float around on the surface and bound to get sucked up the syphon.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

When I've done it in the past, I've put them in a sterilized muslin bag and not bothered weithing it down, just leaving the hops to absorb wort and do their 'tea-bag' bit. I've seem people use marbles and various stainless steel items and tie a string to the bag so it doesn't reach the bottom and stir up crap.

Cheers lads, I only have some brewers gold so I may not dry hop this one.

Tasted the beast today (as a control measure) and shes tasting pretty..... funky. Nice aroma of tropical ness and the taste is hard to put on, still very sweet so I will wait. The other recipe (S-ale) I done a while agohas been in a keg now for about 4 days and that is very bitter (in a sort of good way). It was 61 ibus, but looking at the ratio it came out at 1.36 which is uber high, like a classic IPA. Should be fun, oh and it smells of oranges!
