Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has used the St Peters beer kits before [ruby red, IPA or Summer Ale]?

I have loved using the Woodfordes kits but do want to try something new

I've only tried the Ruby Red but it was very similar to the brewery version and a nice beer.

My fave kit was Wherry, but to be honest you gota try new things and I would expect that St.Peters would make kits that have to equal or suprass the wherry kits, wherry being the "gold standard" of dual can kits to many people.

I dont think you will be disapointed.

Drinkin' - nowt, it's all gone

I have made 4 of the Ruby Red kits and they are excellent. The only problem is that my neighbours have found out and keep conveniently popping around!!

St Peter's Ruby Ale is LUSH!!! 'Cos it's a kit it's really easy and quick to brew and having done about 8 of them over the last 2 years we have never had one that didn't turn out absolutely lovely! Wish I had an extract recipe for it! I think there's a deal on (about £5.00 off) until 28 June so gonna order a couple more for stock.

It’s funny how women change. I never really noticed it until I set up my hidden webcam in Top Shop.

Drinking: Flasher the Dasher, St Peter's Ruby, Thunderbolt, Beam Reach, the last few bottles of Autumn Cider.
    Fermenting: TTL and WTA.
Planning: A Proper Job extract clone !

Yarp... made the mistake of leaving the garage door open while cutting the grass last week and a couple of my neighbours spotted the 500+ bottles in various stages of conditioning... One of 'em has been round 4 times already!!! Gonna have to train my German Shepherd to attack anyone other than me with a beer in hand and lay claymores aroung the garage now.

I never do kits now, but I've heard a lot of good things about the St. Peter's kits. The brewery is not far from me and they are a huge success story. Most 2 can (3 kg) kits are very good and the image of the beer kit has come a very long way in the last 10 years or so.

Seamus. You could try experimenting with some dry hopping with Goldings, Styrian, Cascade or, for a really different effect, Nelson Sauvin or Citra. Just drop about 10 to 20 gms in the Fermenter after 5 days when the initial ferment has died down and leave them for 7 days.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

Would you think its worth adding any dme like when improving the wherry ?Im keen on doing another kit even though extract is for me at the moment something that i can knock up in a under a hour and then barrell is very appealing.

    Building : kegerator
    Fermenting:Dandelion wine
    Conditioning:Fullers pride extract Elderflower wine,Dandelion wine,Ribena wine,summer ale
Drinking: Turbo Cider/summer ale/way to amarillo/funked up wherry

Beerlover, you nothing nothing to lose by following the instructions for the Wherry tweak. I hear St. Peter's is good anyway, but you'll get a good result. It'll be different but that's a good thing. Any aroma hop will do. Go for it.

The St Peter's Ruby Ale kit was my first kit. Very simple to follow and the finished product is great. Just wish they would bring out a kit for one or two other their others beers (Mild; Best Bitter; Porter). But at least I have the Golden Ale and IPA to make next.

Planning: Wheat Beer (partial BIAB mash and extract)
Fermenting: Muntons Continental Lager kit brew; Brupax BOTW Belgian Tripel
    Maturing/Conditioning: Woodforde's Nog
Drinking: Last of the Weird Brew I did last.

    Hi Lev

Had a quick look at the recipe Techno found and I can't get Beer Engine to get anywhere near the figures posted, even with the lastest hop AA values included.

    These are the figures:

    Target OG 1.040
    Expected FG 1.006
    Expected ABV: 4.5%
    Color: 24.3 EBC
    Bitterness: 30 IBU

    This what I get:

    Final Volume: 23 Litres
    Original Gravity: 1.039
    Final Gravity: 1.010
    Alcohol Content: 3.7% ABV
    Colour: 50 EBC
    Bitterness: 24 EBU

I can convert it to extract for you and mess around a bit to try to produce a Ruby type beer if you like, but it will drift quite a way from the recipe.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

cheers saracen, i 100% agree with all your targets but like you say 50EBC? i also think the OG is a little low, what do you think? im greatfull for your help, do you reckon reduce the chocolate and replace with something else ? i would ultimately like to get a nice caramel flavor along with the red color, cheers

Aren't Woodforde's and St Peter's both made by Muntons under licence? They're all based in Suffolk, so it wouldn't be surprising if that's the case. And I'd imagine the quality would be the same too.
