Beersmith crashed.

Had it 2 years and all my recipes from over that time have completely disappeared.

If you use Beersmith - backup now!

Hi Steve. I did think of that but it's Vista we're talking about and it does things that someone with high blood pressure shouldn't even think about.

But .... STOP PRESS ... had a couple of emails with Brad who wrote Beersmith and he pointed me through the Vista minefield and have managed to find the old recipe .bak files... I couldn't get them to stay after closing initially but have managed now and have all old recipes back up.

    I am so happy!

    Cheers to Brad!

Marvellous news, Tony. We were heading for a tragedy there. I use Windows 7, and as much as they like to tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread, take it from me, it isn't!

I used to be very much into image processing, and while I do use Vista Ultimate on a fairly high end PC, nothing is more reliable than my old Windows 2000 Pro box chugging along in tandem! She's seen off a few others in her time.

Must say, I'm rather reluctant to move up to Windows 7, except for the higher RAM capacity which would help considerably when I do dabble in Photoshop occasionally again... Is it really as bad as people let on? I've had very few issues with my Vista installation, and certainly nothing that a system restore to several hours previous didn't fix.

I guess, however, that this is a lesson to all of us to back-up data as part of a routine rather than an occasional action. I've almost all my data saved to a RAID-esque device which will prevent data loss even if a drive fails completely, as duplicates are stored across other drives. It's certainly a higher outlay than a large internal HDD, but I don't think I'd ever go back.

Phew that was a close one. I keep a hard copy print out of my favourite recipes in a folder... old skool!

Doing exactly that now Greg. I regularly back up the documents folder and all my pics but I never even thought about my recipes!

Oh well ... lesson learned. I emailed Brad back and told him that I love him. Oddly, I haven't heard back from him since then!

I'm not sure Brad is that way inclined.

The forum is also a good back up for recipes if you post them!!

I was just doing that when I got the instructions from Brad on Friday night .... I've only been a member of here for about 18 months but recipes in beersmith go back father than that, but yes .... a great way of keeping recipes!

    Hi Steve

Must say, I'm rather reluctant to move up to Windows 7, except for the higher RAM capacity which would help considerably when I do dabble in Photoshop occasionally again... Is it really as bad as people let on?

Hard to say, but, on balance, it's not bad. The thing I like is that it's self-fixing. I have a small photographic business and use a Canon EOS 5d, thankfully not the new one with its 21.7 mp and files the size of a small African country, but the 12.7 mp and full-sized image sensor on mine can make the computer and photoshop work hard. The files load into PS at 60" x 40" and when you are editing at 100% size and a resolution of 250 pixels/inch you are dealing with a 438.8 mb file, and that's big in anyone's language. The computer is an Intel Quad core Q8200 at 2.33 Ghz, 4.00 Gb Ram and the Windows 7 is the Ultimate 64 bit edition. It takes 1 second to perform an Unsharp Mask operation on the above file and 10 seconda to save it as a compressed 49.3 mb file. Not great, but with my old system with Intel 1.5 Ghz and 1.0 Gb of ram and Windows XP I would have been able to make a cuppa and watch an episode of Corrie while I was waiting! On balance, I'd say it takes a bit of getting used to and I doubt if I am using 10% of its potential, but it's certainly an improvement on earlier systems. On the other hand, it's forever automatically downloading updates at the rate of 10 to 15 a week, so there must be some big holes in there somewhere. Not at all unusual with Microsoft.

Funky; I used to have the Q8200! I upgraded to the Q9550 (2.83Ghz) to help out on rendering Crysis at full detail and haven't looked back, but I'd still like to be running 6-8gb of RAM... unfortunately spare funds these days have gone into a new hobby - brewing!

Nath, I have never owned a console in my life, pure PC through and through! I usually just go for a quickgame with whatever game has a good connection and a reasonable number of players. Can't say that I'm any good at it though

I have to own a console, not because im "cool"! Far from it. I have been playing Steetfighter for as long as I can remember and PC's arnt great for that kinda thing. But my main love is pc games. My thumbs are totally dyslexic (tried many a fps on a console and Pfffssst!) so a mouse keyboard combo is what I can relate to. Grab yourself counterstrike source and have a blast, it may be old but damn its good! PC love back at'cha!
