Sanitising Equipment
Hi All,
I'm a newbie to this home brewing and very much enjoyed brewing my first batch (from the coopers starter kit). I'd like to move onto more complicated brews in the future but it seems to me that the key to getting started is proper sanitisation. However whilst there's a lot of information on the web on the subject it's all a little confusing.
Now I used VWP in my first brew and whilst it was ok and I rinsed everything out I'm a bit worried about the smell lingering (no evidence for that yet though). I've heard about using sodium metabisulphite but could do with some advice on how to use it (i.e. does it sanitise on contact, does in need to be left to dry etc..) . I'd quite like to learn to use this method before moving onto the no rinse stuff but again I don't know where I can find information out about no rinse sanitisers or even where to buy them..
Apologies for the newbie questions but if anyone could offer any advice that would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Phil

Mix sodium metabisulphite with citic acid to make a more powerful disinfectant.
I use it in a spray bottle and hit surfaces, out side of kegs, taps etc with it.
Apparently you don't need to rinse as it's not poisonous. I give it a contact time of 5 minutes.
I use VWP for everything else and have no problems with it.

Hi Phil,
See the post in this forum on Videne. It can be picked up/ordered from Tescos. It is no rinse and having used it for months have no issues with infection. It will last ages.

Hey Varnish... any idea how long the SM/Citric Acid will last in a spray bottle? What quantities are you using?
(with grateful thanks to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and slightly adapted)
