nath812Recultivated yeast from Proper Job

2 years ago | Nath (Moderator)

Well its the first time I have tried to recultivate some wee beasties and what better way to do it, by doing it with proper job! Saved the yeast from 4 bottles, made up a small starter (which I will be adding to when ready) of 500ml and 50g malt (hope thats about the right percentage).

The funny thing is its been about a day and I swear it smells like proper job! I was pushing the bottle to get some more air in for a shake and my god it smells good!

Dunno if I will pull it off or not but if I do I will save the slurry from whatever batch I make with it and if its any good I will decant and post to who ever wants it.

Drinkin' - nowt, it's all gone

When are you planning to use it Nath?

I would start building it up into a larger starter now. Cool it so all the yeast drops out. Pour off the liquid and replace with 1 litre starter (100g spraymalt). Leave for a couple of days and repeat. You should then be up to pitching volume for a standard ABV brew.

Im not actually brewing for a little while so I may just keep on adding and adding so I get a fair chunk then fridge it for use later on.

Yeah I would but you don't want to over pitch if using the whole lot on one brew. I would probably make about 1 litre additions which should give you what you need.

I haven't got my head round yeast cell counts yet but I'm sure you can find some info on the web. I'm pretty sure you can measure them from the thickness of the sediment.

Well as an unfortunate update the yeast has been chucked. It was all going really well, lot and lots of sediment but I found deposits of white on the side of the container where the surface of the wort met,so I ditched it. I was hoping it was just where I kept shaking the thing and sugary bits were deposited there and the yeast was a munching, as it didnt smell but as a precaution I just got shot of it.

I think you probably made a wise choice otherwise you could be chucking a whole brew.
