Really Bitter Bitter
Hmmm, this is not good. My first AG - London Pride Clone in the keg has turned very very bitter. When it was young it was very drinkable and i polished off about half a keg (got 10 bottles of this that i havent tried any of yet as i always bottle a percentage of all my brews). After my brew passed the 5 weeks conditioning, it has turned out vile in all honesty. Not to mention i could give away some free samples as a fierce contender to Ex-Lax (yes it really does give you the trots too!) - it should definately be renamed 'Old GrumbleBelly'
Any ideas what the hell happened to it? how does a bacterial infection get into my keg? - any tips and advice welcome to prevent a repeat. I've never experienced this before! any ideas what it has caught to create such a nasty? It does not smell off and is crystal clear!
The only 4) positives are 1) that the bottles may be ok - will crack open one this evening and let you know the result - 2) I've just ordered some goodies from Greg to make a Summer Witt bier (yum!) 3) Im in a good mood as i've just had a holiday in the Maldives! 4) On arrival home, my Exmoor Gold clone was ready and it is flippin lovely and a top tasting brew!
Hope your all keeping well and brewing well?
Regards
Howard

Hi Howard, perhaps you're taste buds are shot after all that lager in the maldives
not that I've been to the maldives so have no clue what the drinks are like, just guessing.
Anyway, jokes aside, that does seem a bit strange. Normally my beers get less bitter and flavoursome over time but something has clearly gone wrong. To be honest you'll probably never find out, just have to be extra clean and careful on the next batch.
Would be good to hear if the same thing has happened to the bottles as if not then its something that's got in the keg when you put the beer in there.

Yep, you got it - it was all 'Lion Lager' in the Maldives - it was very hot out there and the lager was icy cold and not too bad
Just opened a bottle - carbonated well, poured into glass and carbonation bubbles immediately rose to the top of the glass to form a head - turned round and within seconds the gas had completely dispersed and the head had vanished too - flat as a pancake and same taste as the kegged beer. Oh well some you win and this was the one I lost. Still life would be boring with everything going right all the time, so i will learn from this one. Using a mild bleach solution on the bottles now and a heavy clean of my keg (stripped right down)
Only one thing i did differently with this brew to any others I have done (1 other AG and kits) is that I dry hopped the fermenter - I did notice a slight grassy taste prior to the beer starting to go downhill. Any idea if the dry hopping could have caused problems?
Cheers,
H

Yeah could of. It must be something you did in the fermenter. Did you dry hop after a few days of fermenting?

Hey H!
Damn .. holiday in the maldives ... not bad - did you try any of the Lion Stout - far superior. Brewed in Sri Lanka, which is where my missus is from and a class beer to accompany a curry
We've just been planning our holiday to sri lanka next year and wondering if we can afford to squeeze in a few days in the maldives.
How is your storage temp for bottles and Keg? I'm having problems here - although that shouldn't affect the the carbonation! You sure the grumblebelly isn't a hangover from the hols?
Here's something I tried recently and works every time .. find a beer that you love and mix them 50/50, any off tastes disappear.

I wonder if thats where the idea and name for 20/20 came from (dont think they sell it any more). Shame about the beer there, still if the exmore gold tastes fine then just put it down to "one of those things". I have heard that prolonged dry hopping can create grassy flavours but nothing that would make you want to chuck.....a ..... beer.
Sorry had a tear in my eye when I said that.

I added the hops to the second FV after i racked off my beer. I boiled a muslin bag and placed the hops in it before adding to the FV. The dodgy tum was prior to my holiday - tried some of the brew on the Saturday night prior to flying out on Sunday night - Lol, must be the first person to go on holiday with the trots! God i'm glad (and probably so are the people who's countries I flew over!) that aircraft have retention tanks!!!
)
Lion stout sounds very nice - unfortunately the Lager was all they had on the island - along with very generous measures of rum, whisky, vodka etc (think they were using the spirit as a mixer for my coke
Go for it Tony, I was looking at Sri Lanka on the map onboard the aircraft and it doesnt seem far from the Maldives - quite a few people who worked on the island came from Sri Lanka - and they were really lovely people too. By the way my beer storage area is in a dark, cool garage - usually fine for all my brews. The inital first 2-3 days after kegging/bottling the brew stays in my warm south facing kitchen to get it moving -then moved to the garage.
Nath - were you wearing a black armband when you said the words 'chucking beer' - i washed mine away with the tears and the words of 'goodbye old friend - what might have been'
