Brighton BrewerPrimary Fermenting Advice

1 year ago | Brighton Brewer (Member)

Hi Guys,

I'm currently brewing Woodfordes Nog to see out the winter. Its been in the primary fermentation stage for about two weeks now and the hydrometer doesn't seem to be changing on each observation. Is it abnormal for a kit like this to take this long? If so why? The temperature is a constant 20 degrees and the beer smells ace but could something be wrong with it?

Also what are the pro's and cons of a longer primary fermentation?

Cheers for your help guys, dunno where i'd be without this forum in these early days?!?!?!?

Fermenting: Woodfordes Nog
Barrel: Nada
Bottled: Woodfordes Wherry
Drinking: Dark Star's Imperial Stout

Pros - Allows yeast to drop out so therefore should take less time to clear in the bottle/barrel

cons - Possible infection and/or oxidization.

2 weeks is fine though as long as the reading has been constant (and around the final gravity) then off ya go!

Drinkin' - nowt, it's all gone
    Plannin'-
Loads a beer after an upgrade!
