Ok, so my beer has been racked into the pressure barrel and left to further condition for around 3 weeks now. I have drunk about just under half of it at the moment, and last night i poured myself another pint and its starting to taste quite flat.

Until now, it has tasted great and i have had no problems whatsoever. I used caster sugar for the priming for lack of nothing else and i used the designated amount.

So, my question is basically this, was it because i used caster sugar? and what can i do to carbonate it again

Thanks in advance,

Pete

    Hi Pete
from what I've read recently, you can use just about any sugar you want that you have in stock, seems to make very little difference.

As far as your barrel is concerned, is it pressurized? If it isn't, then you need to look into doing that - if it is, I'd suggest replacing the CO2 cartridge. There are others on here way more experienced in the ways of barrel beer and I'm sure they can help.
    Good luck!

Ok, ill try adding a C02 cartridge then, see if that helps, thanks.

One question, since I havn't done this before im not too sure. Do i leave the new cap on once i have used the C02 bulb, because i have the standard cap on the pressurised barrel at the moment.

Also, how do i know if the barrel is pressurised? because i believe it is, because whenever i pour a pint, it makes a low rumble noise in the barrel, and i have had no problems pouring out of the barrel.

    Thanks,

    Pete

Hi Pete, You can leave the cap with the pin valve on, in fact I would only use that cap from now on.

Add some gas, draw off some beer. If its better carbonated then fine, if not then add some more Co2. Like Tony said, The type of sugar wouldn't have made any difference, it just needs some Co2.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

    Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
    Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

Thanks for the advice guys, but i have one more (possibly stupid) question..

Do i take off the metal C02 bulb once ive put the C02 into the barrel? i only ask because i was just wondering if the C02 would just escape out of the hole in the valve.

    Hi Pete,

I use the budget pressure barrel (wilko's). I noticed that the original cap did allow the gas to escape. I used the upgrade co2 cap (rubbed some vasaline around the seal and thread) and it is totally airtight. Current brew (Coopers Aussie Lager) has been in there for 3 weeks and has lost no pressure after about 2/3rds drunk. Have not needed to use the co2 bulbs yet.

Another tip - may be worth inserting the co2 bulb wearing a glove - they can get VERY cold especially if any gas escapes whilst injecting.

    Good luck
