PlopleukPlastic Boiler

1 year ago | Plopleuk (Member)

i did my first all grain about 3 weeks ago and used my new plastic boiler for the job.
i did it as a boil in the bag.
when i barreled it i thought it was a good taste but it had a little bit of a funny after tang which i am worried about.
i fully cleaned and sanitized every bit of equipment but am worried the plastic boiler may have given an off taste as it was new.
is this possible or am i just mistaking fresh hop flavor which will ease off with time?
gonna try and do the way to Amarillo (hopped up)with all grain tomorrow so i hope it wasn't my boiler.

Hi Plopleuk, I doubt its your boiler as loads of people use plastic without issues.

Hopefully it will fade with time as its still quite green but if not then could be many reasons.

What water are you using, tap?
Did you treat your water with a campden tab?
Can you try and describe the taste in more detail?
    What Steriliser are you using?

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

    Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

He he! You sound just like me. I too use a placcy boiler that I made and Im constantly worried about the taste of my young beer. I think in the end its just having the patience to see what happens.

The way to ammerillo is a tried and tested beer by a few people and im sure it will turn out great.

I used water from the tap but didn't treat as i have never needed to with extract brews.
the taste is hard to explain but ill try it again tonight and let you know if its still there.
I think its SDP I bought it from my local home brew shop.

    thanks for the support Nath.

Okay. Tap water is fine but I would treat it with 1/2 a campden tablet to get rid of the chlorine. Just crush up and mix in prior to brewing. You don't need to leave overnight or anything.

Does it have a TCP kind of taste?

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

    hi Greg,
is that one half per full batch?
I do use bottled for non boiled water to top up and help with the cooling.
and yes its a TCP kinda taste but comes after the initial taste.

I would say its the chlorine in the water. Yes add 1/2 a tablet per 25 litres (so per batch) and this should help.

Alternatively get the water readings from your local water company and then do full water treatment.

I will post some info on this in a separate post a bit later.

No campden tab wouldn't help now I'm afraid.

just done a bit of research and your totally right about it being the water.
also most have said leave the beer to condition and it fades to a drinkable beer so fingers crossed.
just mashing my AG way to Amarillo hopped up some using bottled water from lidle so fingers crossed that was the problem.
    thanks again Greg top support.
