Partial Mash Advice
I've been using extract kits for about 2 years & would like to ease myself into all grain brewing. I don't have the equipment or the space at the moment for a full all grain setup, but I would like to try a partial mash to get started.
I understand the concept of boiling the mash within a muslin bag but the quantity of grain vs the amount of hops is still unclear. Are there any generic recipes which would get me started? e.g. for a 20 litre fermentation you will need X kilos of grain & X grams of hops?
Without a little bit of advise the jump from kit to all grain seems a very long way away. Thanks for all your help.

I would suggest getting some kind of application like Beersmith. This will allow you to select the grains and hops and will calculate how the quantities will affect your final brew. It also allows you to define the equipment you're going to use and the method you're using to brew (extract, partial mash or AG).
The variables usually relevant are the colour, the bitterness and the alcohol level. These are affected by the amount of grain and hops you use. For example, the more grain the more sugar should be extracted and the higher the alcohol level. Also, the more hops you boil the more bitter the beer will be.
Beersmith comes with example recipes and there are loads on this forum and others like it. Just find one that you like the look of and either try straight off or put it into Beersmith and vary the quantities.
There are other program available as well such a QBrew and Beer Tools but Beersmith seems to be the most popular.

I've gone down the Brew-in-the-Bag path. You may find it simpler to try first and then go the full hog. With BIAB you do everything in a single boiler.

I looked over the tools you recommended & BeerTools seems to the best one (in my opinion). I suppose the thing that worries people like me (newbies) is that everything is not in a "can" and already prepared, thus when brewing from scratch you understand the complexities of the beer making, but I imagine with a little time the beers I'll be making will be top notch. Thanks guys.
