BeermonkeyOz & James Raise the Bar

Did anyone see this programme this evening?

Some interesting beers made the head brewer from Sharpes brewery was on and he'd bought 4 beers in for them to try.

1. Made from Offal
2. Made from Oysters
3. Made from Jelly Fish
4. Can't remember...

Then they had an alcoholic ginger beer called Grandma's Weapons Grade Ginger Beer coming in at 9% Abv! and then various ciders too.

This is shaping up to be a great programme but not sure about the Offal beer think i'd throw up trying that one... plus anyone for red eye?

Neil

Hey Neil.. I've recorded this and can't wait to watch it .. best thing is it's a four-parter!

It's not James May though, but Hugh Dennis.

    The 4th one was chillie.

I caught this and thought it was good. Stuart Howe (from Sharps) obviously didn't want to show his face though!!

Good positive view on home brewed beers too!

If you brewed a Jelly Fish beer you'd be hiding your face too!

I liked that fact that Skinners got some exposure. They make some cracking beers. I love the Cornish Knocker and Betty Stoggs and they're available at the Supermarket.

I also loved the Babycham experiment. Just goes to show how pretentious people get at such gatherings.

    Factoid:

It was the first alcoholic product to be advertised on UK television, the campaign being launched in 1957, and was originally marketed as a "genuine champagne perry"

Does anyone know when part 2 is on?

I watched it on the iPlayer last night because my Sky+ Box decided to throw a hissy fit and crash the announcement is not mentioned on that.

Must admit i thought the Babycham experiement was hilarious as you say goes to show how pretentious people can be towards that kind of thing.

But would anyone seriously like to try any of those beers brewed by Sharpes? The chilli one i'd seriously consider, but offal? Jelly Fish? dear god still sends shivers

The bloke from Sharps should be hiding his face, for brewing that awful bland liquid known as Doom Bar...

    Cheers Simon!

Looking forward to that episode already.

Doom Bar is a really nice bottle of ale... Not like Greene King IPA which is tastless muck!

Indeed, tastebuds are funny old buggers aren't they?

Maybe I'll try another pint when next I see it, see if I've just been unlucky.

St Austell produce some of my favourite beers but I still really like Doom Bar. Its not that exciting I grant you but its a very well balanced and tasty pint. It does need to be served correctly though as I had a pint in a pub the other week and its wasn't very nice at all but that was definitely down to the pub not the beer.

Stuart Howe is a top bloke too although I don't think he can take credit for Doom Bar as he didn't invent it the owner of Sharps did.

His blog is here and there is some quite interesting stuff on it. Link

Eventually got around to watching it last night. Why is it that Hugh Dennis makes out he doesn't know Oz well when they made 'Oz and Hugh Drink to Christmas' last year?

Not a bad watch though but why did they leapfrog Devon and go from Cornwall to Somerset? Some great beers come from Devon ... and what about Dorset?

I liked the first episode. I would have prefered a more in depth look at Porter, rather than a casual mention. My other thoughts are about Oz Clarke. Expert or massive piss head with a big vocabulary?

I have to admit when he used to do that food show on BBC2 many moons ago i used to think he was a complete tit! However, the more i've watched him with James May and now Hugh Dennis i think he has gone up slightly in my estimation.

I would not have thought a wine buff would have had a decent palate for beer. However, he has proved me wrong and he has a good amount of knowledge. He is a complete wee wee head though and wouldn't want to challenge him to a drinking session.

I can understand people's feelings but I'm with you Neil .. he may be a bit of a weirdo, but anyone who champions the cause of real brewers and real beers is ok in my book!

I would love to get paid to travel round the country sampling different drinks so fair play to him. James May obviously didn't fancy another trip though!

    Can you blame him?

I mean any man who goes around in a pink dressing gown while sharing a camper van with you speaks volumes. It's only a short jump to a hey nonny, nonny then i'd have to call the police!

The guy is seriously good at his job though. I mean the way he described Thornbridge Jaipur IPA was spot on! I tried some at the GBBF and followed his notes. Yes i did look a tit swilling the beer around my mouth etc but those flavours came out.

Plus the fact he champions home brewing deserves a big slap on the back! Not many people would do that.

I would jump at the chance to drive around with him tasting ales and ciders.

I think the show would be better if they had someone drive them around times when hugh says looks like im driving again be better if they both got on the drink at same time.
