JulesOmega Hops

Hi

Can anyone tell me the basics about the hop variety Omega?

There is a hop plant shop fairly close to me that sells this particular hop plant but I cant find any info on it to decide if I want to grow it. I have room for four hop plants and am trying to choose ones that are not so easy to find, or are expensive to buy, in brewing shops.

Thanks

Jules

Drinking: Un-named 2 Can bitter, Doodlebug, Thunderbolt
Conditioning: LP Extract
Fermenting : Old Speckled Hen Extract
Planning: Thunderbolt again, Rocker APA and a wheat extract c/o Hamish!

Hi Jules. This is all I could find. On the other hand, I found all sorts of brew info site I'd never heard of, including one with the specs of 103 different hops!

Omega, Bittering. 'High-alpha'(No figures quoted). English
    "Old English high alpha variety."

    From Jim's beer kit. Sept 7th 2006

    Omega (United Kingdom)
    Specifications
    Aplha Acids: 8.0-9.0%.
    characteristics: Some Challenger characteristics.
Additional Information: Getting rarer, so try it before it disappears!
Examples: Bunce's Brewery Best Bitter, Benchmark, and Old Smokey; Crouch Vale Brewery Kursaal Flyer.
Virtually nothing out there on this one, never mind rare, I think it's gone extinct.
You could try the breweries of the above ales for a supply, wherever they may be.

You did say you wanted one that's hard to find, and I think you've found it!
I've mailed Stonehenge Brewery to see if it's still available, but the thinking seems to be that it's either susceptible to disease or a poor cropping variety. I think I'd go for something a bit more usable.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

Thank you Saracen - maybe I'll pass on this one.

So far I have got an Early Bird which I know is just a varient of the EKGolding but is used by Shepherds Neame for their Early Bird beer and I do love that brew - hoping I can make my own clone one day.

whats the site with the 103 hop details - would be handy to have that!

    thanks again

This is the list, but it's last updated July 5th 2000, so I don't know if it's much use.

This one is about hop gardening, with dieases, pruning, etc.

These are all about hop varieties, substitutions, selections for different beers and comparisons

Hope it helps. Don't forget that most traditional hops grow to about 18 feet tall. There are quite a few dwarf varieties around now.
