gregNicer in a bottle?

1 year ago | Greg (Admin)

I was thinking the other day about various beers that I've tried in bottle and cask and I couldn't think of one which was better bottled.

Most of the examples I could think of where so much better on tap, in fact most were a real disappointment in the bottle although I do like bottled ale (especially the one's which I've not managed to try on tap).

Does a beer exist which is better from the bottle?

Planning:Maybe a lager.
Fermenting:
Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

I had a pint of Cornish Knocker in one bar in Falmouth and then a bottle of the same in another bar. The bottle was far better. Whether that's down to the landlord or not I don't know. I'm going back in Sept so will look around for another pub that serves it.

It's funny bit I prefer bottled beer over draft most of the time but maybe I live in a crappy area for real ale pubs!

Interesting. I really like that Cornish Knocker, definitely the best offering from Skinners that I've tried. Not tried it on tap though.

Batemans Victory Ale... much better from the bottle than on tap and it's stronger too.

Yeah quite a few beers seem to be stronger in the bottle than on tap.

Others I noticed recently include Fullers Discovery and Badgers TangleFoot. Can't see why that would be the case?

Have to go along with you on this one Greg .. I can't think of a single ale that's better in the bottle. I'm trying to think of all the bottle-conditioned beers but I can't think of any that I've seen on tap!

Odd .. as I bottle all my beers... heh heh!

The key is probably bottle conditioning because when I do bottle my home brew (as that is not often) it certainly doesn't suffer for it.

Although saying that, Hop Back beers are still better on tap and they are all bottle conditioned. Summer lightning is really disappointing in a bottle but probably my favourite beer on tap.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

I agree with ya greg. Summer lightning from a bottle is useless. Minikegs and draught are 100 times better. I did have some otter bitter this weekend from a barrel and while it was a good pint the bottle has the edge on the buiscityness (if that is a word!) Good pint either way though, both have their strengths.

Next couple of brews do a few bottles with a kegs worth and right at the end of the keg pour a pint and pour a bottle and make some notes me thinks!

    Conditionin'/Drinkin' - OPA Pale
    Conditionin' - LEB Pale
    Conditionin' - Thwaits Nutty Black
    Plannin' - A user upper!

So pleased that you said that about summer lightening. I've now tried it twice in the bottle - mainly because everyone raves about it, but can see nothing in it, pretty much tasteless!

Check it out on draft if you ever see it. Its got a really nice smooth bitterness. Really refreshing and very moorish. Its similar to Exmoor Gold.

Every pub round here has it but you don't see that often elsewhere.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

Am i the only one here who likes Summer Lightening in a bottle? Mind you we don't get it here in Norfolk on draft often so it could be the reason why.

I just think that its not a shade on the draft version. The minikegs are pretty good though if you can get hold of them.

It's a bit like Woodfordes Wherry... it tastes lovely on tap as do any of their other beers. However, for some reason the bottled version just isn't a patch on the draft.

I will keep an eye out Greg for the keg version at some point. Not sure though whether any of the big 4 supermarkets sell them?

Not sure. You can get Summer Lightning everywhere round here but the brewery is only a few miles away. You can buy them from their website. Click here
