new london brewer
Seems like it's customary to post here when you join the forum...so hello.
I was drawn to these dark arts very innocently when a friend was cutting back the elder tree in his garden this May and it seemed a shame to waste the heads, so I got a rough and ready elderflower champagne on the go in the washing up bowl with some bread yeast (sorry - blame River Cottage). Which got me thinking maybe I should get some gear and try some real stuff...
Now got a Woodfordes Great Eastern conditioning in the barrel and just ordered a pilsener as the FV is sitting forlorn and empty (though having since read the forums maybe that was a mistake...)
No doubt will be pestering everyone when things go wrong.

Hi Laughingapple and welcome to the forum.
The Great Eastern is a lovely beer so you should enjoy that. How did the Elderflower champagne turn out?
You'll find plenty of helpful, friendly advice on here so fire away with any questions or tips of your own.

Hi Laughing... nice to meet you. I'm in London too.

I too was minding my own business when the thought of turning our pears in to cider popped into my head! 10 months later I've got 2 kits and 4 extracts under my belt with All Grain looming over the horizon. Think on my friend. Think on.

Cheers all. The elderflower is not too bad for a first shot, and a bit of a random coddling together of various internet recipes. very dry indeed (left it to ferment for a good 10 days), aromatic, layer of sediment in the amber swingtop bottles which muddies it up if you try to drink it straight but ok with a bit of patience releasing the gas well in advance of when i want to drink it, nice and fizzy and clear. lovely colour (see avatar), and looks just the job in a wee champagne glass. bit yeasty but maybe I've only Hugh Fearnly whatsits to blame for that (actually I could have been patient and seen if the natural yeasts did the job on their own...). It was lovely as it sat in the washing up bowl under a tea towel fizzing gently away and filling the house with sweet elderflowery goodness.
simonb_13 I have very little doubt that if the great eastern is successful then it will def be the slippery slope to All Grain... and i am very jealous of your pears (I assume from a tree...) my wee postage stamp London garden can stretch to a few sticks of rhubarb but not much more. Am dreaming of country gardens, mini orchard and chickens. But then you can't make beer out of chickens.
