more questions keep coming!
sorry folks as i read around the site i keep getting more questions...
1. can someone explain to me how, when the beer is ready in the barrel, i get a nice clear pint without any sediment? is it because all the sediment remains in fv after syphoning or does it settle at bottom of barrel and not come out of the tap?
2. i'm a bit concerned about where to put my barrel when its in need of a 'dark, cool' place. all over my house appears to be about 18. my only option is the shed but that will be freezing! how essential is it that i move it out of my dining room where it is a steady 18?
thankyou!

Hello!
1. Most of the yeast is left in the fermenter when you keg and the rest will "drop out" so yeah it settles out and don't come out the tap.
2. 18c is fine to get the co2 going but it wants to be somewhere cooler so it can absorb the co2 quicker and to allow it to "drop out" also. How cold is your shed? I used to keep my barrels in the outside cupboard which is around 9c which is perfecty fine. Then again I know people who prefer ale at room temp so why not keep it in and see how it does, a few people I know keep their kegs indoor near them at all times (aka the pc/bed/living room)

ah, so this poses new questions! i had it in my mind that the barrel needed to be cool to clear, but then could be moved inside once done. is this not the case? i did read that the barrel needed to be left to settle for a couple of days once moved.
also, how do i know when its time to move the keg from 18c to somewhere cooler?
thanks Nath

You move it somewhere cooler when pressure has built up. You can tell this by the little stumps on the bottom of the barrel. If they lift a bit off the floor pressure is goon, sometimes the whole bottom of the barrel will bulge so you can really tell the pressure is there! (Let some out at this point as its over pressured and could cause problems)
The beer will clear faster in a cooler place, but remember that some beers will look a bit cloudy is the temp is too low due to chill haze. Some people get this, others dont, it wont affect flavour.
Id still put ale in a cool place as there is nothing better than a cool hoppy ale after a hard days work.

Stupid question but how do you let the pressure out, open the lid?

Nope, there is a little rubber band visible on the top of the lid, get a cocktail stick (or a nail if you dont bite em like I do) and tweak the band, this will release pressure and you should hear a woosh noise.
