Little Creatures
Title of an album by the excellent Talking Heads.
Also, the extra ingredient in last night's brew.
I was making a variation on my Munich Dunkel recipe, mostly to use up some Munich Malt I've had lying around for almost a year.
Anyway, was measuring out the grains (3kg Pale, 1kg Munich, 200g Crystal, 200g Chocolate) for a 19L brew and then I saw it - a little maggot crawling over the lid of my boiler. I can only guess he fell out of the grains when I was transferring them to the mash tun. I chucked the little beggar away and can only guess his mates (if he had any) were killed off in the 67 degree mash.
I have seen the odd larva carcass in the past in spent grains, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced these little intruders?
I try and keep my grains as airtight as possible but I wonder if the aging Muncih Malt is the culprit.
Is this where the term 'pub grub' comes from (baa-dum)?

Ooooooo that's painful!
Never seen any grain-grubs I'm afraid Barry but I can't seeing it doing any harm... might give it extra body.
You'll need to Fly Sparge though.
Oooooo that's almost as painful!

Well, it's good we can have a larv-a-bout it.
Yeah, Tony, I can't see it doing much harm. Just a little unnerving. I'll be drinking most of the finished product myself, but was just curious.

Bazza, that bit in your signature worries me.
So long as they're cooked thoroughly they should be OK. It's not as if you're boiling up Witchetty Grubs or strange bits of Kangaroo .......... are you?
Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
Drinking: - All of it!!

Nath. Are grain weevils about 6mm long, 1mm thick with a sort of black dot to tell the front from the back? If so then yes it was.
So, compared to a fly larvae or the like is this the lesser of two weevils?
Sorry; it's been a long day.
Saracen; that sig bit is more wishful thinking than anything else. I don't have the time, money or stomach to be a fully fledged alcho.
