saracenJust got tickets to see the Quo!

1 year ago | saracen (Moderator)

I've seen them before, so it was a bit rash, but I thought; "Well, at their age it might be the last chance." June 11th in Thetford Forest. Yes, a Thursday night at 7.30 pm. I said it was rash. Last time we stood by the speakers and towards the end of the night the sound system played up. They sounded like they were on Helium. When it finished I realised the sound system was OK and it was my ears! For 3 days everyone sounded like Mickey Mouse!

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
Drinking: - All of it!!

Nice one, Saracen. I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Not a fan of the Quo myself, but I love a good gig.

My last-but-one gig back in October was to see Swans in Dublin. The band split up in 1997; I'd never seen them, but they reformed last year with a new album and tour. I had tickets ordered for me and the bro and a cheap hostel booked in Dublin so we could go on the sesh afterwards. My wife was due our second child late November, but this show was late October, so what could possibly go wrong.......

...baby decided she wanted to come early. A week before the gig the missus had to go to hospital and was told she was staying in until the child was born. I put thoughts of the gig out of my head, that was, until the night before the show when the wife, the most dead-on person in the world said, 'sure why don't you go to the gig, and just drive back up the same night - if anything happens, I'll call your mobile?' Simple but brilliant. So that's what me and the bro did. I drove us 100 miles from Belfast to Dublin, saw one of the best concerts of my life, by arguably the best goth/new wave/post/punk/industrial band of the 80s and 90s - and rememebered every second of it - then drove us 100 miles back again - NOT BEFORE getting to chat with Micheal Gira, the lead singer, after the show.

5 days later my second little daughter was born

The support act was an English guy called James Blackshaw. Solo act; just him and a 12-string guitar. He was excellent. Chatted with him too after the show and he was a really decent guy; friendly and modest.Worth checking out on Youtube.

Last gig was late November; The Wedding Present in Belfast. Superb as always.

Sorry, Saracen, bit of a ramble there but I'm sure you'll agree that nothing beats the excitement of going to a gig.

    Hi Barry
That is the stuff that golden memories are made of.
Quo were good, but the best band I saw, again in Thetford Forest, was The Blues Band with Paul Jones. Can't remember all the lineup, but Tom McGuiness was playing along with Dave Kelly. Their stage presence was electric and their performance polished and professional. The biggest let down, again in Thetford Forest, was The Bootleg Beatles.
Just quickly. 4 years ago I was going to Brixham to stay with my cousin and he rang me as I was driving down. What time were we arriving as it was the last night of the Brixham Festival and there was a free band on. Who is it? I asked. Dunno, he said, but it's free. Well, we got there and, on stage..... Stoned Again!! They perform in Britain about once in 5 years and there it was .... free! If you ever get the chance, go and see them. They are more like The Stones than The Stones!

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Heh! Thanks, Saracen; I'll keep an ear out for them.

It's funny but the good thing about tribute bands is that they play all the decent memorable stuff and don't try and push the tributee's frankly second-rate recent material down the throats of the paying audience.

Have to say my best gig ever was Ministry (80's/90's industrial/metal) in Glasgow in 2003. I had booked flights and tickets for the Glasgow gig a week before someone pointed out to me that they were playing in Dublin the night before! AAGGG! Still, was a great weekend (I love Glasgow) and a fantastic show. However, blokes my age should NOT head bang and should NOT enter the mosh pit. I was black and blue, and couldn't turn my neck for a week after the show.

Ah, the Quo. I to take a fancy to them every now and then but not really my every-day listening! At least the bassist uses the same guys to make his guitar(s) as made my dearest possession.

I think the last gig I attended was by an Austrian named Thomas Leeb who describes himself as, somewhere along the lines of, 'The bastard child of acoustic guitar'. First saw him around 10 years ago in a room above a mobile phone shop playing to about 8 of us, all on sofas. The last gig must have been closer to 50 people in a converted garage in a small village on the shores of Strangford Lough! While I strive to even pin down one of the tracks, I wonder how the man isn't a sensation.

Excellent! Well done. They're not one of my must-see bands but I did see them at knebworth one year, christ knows when - it was a while ago

Also saw The Blues Band a while back and Jonah Lewie was in support - talk about enduring pain to reach pleasure!

Hope you have a great time!

Nice guitar Steve, 5 string fretless!

I've seen a few bands play, but my best ever gig has to be Metallica at Wembley in 2007 - effing crazy gig! My first ever foray into the mosh!

I can't disagree with that... I just don't think he has the credentials to fill the shoes of Mr Newstead!
Too much of the ape-esque strutting and not enough musical ability. I can't claim to have seen the band live, but I can see a certain degree of style over substance when comparing him to Jason.

The Mosh. The only pit to be in. Can't beat the friendly voilence!

Faith No More in Dublin a load of years ago, Fugazi in Belfast and, as mentioned above Ministry in Glasgow all account for the many tender spots and neck creaks that I've carried into today.

To the point where, in the last 18 months, I've seen Soulfly and had leave the moshing after 2 songs due to dizziness (too much Guinness too), and most shamfefully when I went to see Fear factory last year- My wife dropped me off, I had two pints, asked the barman if they did any real ales, didn't talk to a single bugger in the gig and walked home sober. I'm 38 now, and very few of my mates like anything more edgy than, say, if Daniel O'Donnell stepped onto stage after forgetting to say his Rosary.

Age should not be a determination of what you should listen to. Look at the late great John Peel. His two favourite bands - the Fall and The wedding Present - 2 bands I've seen more of than any others. Mark E. Smith is a legend!

Steve. Love the guitar. Check out this guy, James Blackshaw:-

A bit tipsy at this stage. Been a long day. Lots of miles driven, so happy to settle with the last of my keg of Burton Bridge (GW recipe). I highly recommend it.

Whilst listening to the glorious strains of Germany's finest, Das Ich:-

Steve, That's one gorgeous bass! I imagine you play in a band. Anyone we might have heard of.... or likely to hear of?
We can't be brewing all the time, so this is my distraction.

All I have to do now is learn to play them properly, although I do have to say that Clapton plays in a very similar style to mine.

Used to play in a big jazz band, but the last time I played live was... er, 2008 I think, just after leaving school. I do miss it dearly, but without a 9-5 job it's not really feasible What make is the acoustic? I don't recognise the headstock

It's a Lyle. I bought it from Dave Daltrey and as far as we can work out, largely from the shape, it dates from the early 70's. Lovely tone. I'm having no end of trouble trying to get the image the right size via Photobucket at the moment. Whatever size I load up it spills over the page!

At Last! Computers! I HATE them!!

The G&L's quite special. Only one of their cheaper makes, but it's fitted with American hand-wound pickups and comes with all that knowledge Leo Fender took from CBS fitted as standard.

Sounds quite a machine! I've never had handwounds fitted to an electric so I don't think I appreciate the difference, but I have seen differences with having the coils dipped in wax and not; somehow smoother and more mellow. I LOVE the pickups Status are using these days; twin coil humbuckers dipped in wax on my S2, by far the best sound of any bass I've owned and not the dearest. Used to have 6 Status basses! Wish I'd not parted with any of them to be honest *weep*

Someone just let me know if this is going too far off-topic!
    Below is the current brood.

    Left to right;
Status S1000 4 string (I refurbed this one, total state but a bargain price when I bought it)
    Status S2 5 string fretless
    Avalon AS101-CE acoustic
    Superstrat fretless
    Ibanez RG-something?
    Fender Stratocaster

    Nice collection!
I used to have a bright yellow ibanez 6 string, my mates used to call it the electric banana. One gig we did I broke two strings and sliced the edge of my finger - looked most impressive with blood all over it.

Hey Steve, give ya a tenner for the Ibanez. heheheh. My first guitar was a Ibanez RG350dx which I swapped with a mate to help him out on tour for his first "proper" guitar a Jackson Dinky. Always loved that guitar so seemed like a good swap!

Hi Steve. The Ibanez HSH looks very like the RG370DX I traded for the G&L. Don't you just hate tuning it?
I played bass in a band in 1970. Bought the bass, a 1962 Vox long neck, in red, for £10 in 1968, generally abused it for a few years and I don't know where it went from there. Enough to make you cry, really. Our band started from nothing, achieved nothing and went nowhere, but we had a lot of fun on the way. What got me was all the attention. I had heard all the tales of the young girls swarming all over the tour bus eager to sacrifice themselves at the High Alter of Rock. Well ... never saw any of that, but we did get a lot of attention from the police over our £25 Ford Transit. On the other hand, a good friend of mine, Eddie Allen, who is one of Marty Wilde's Wildcats and ex British Fender Demonstrator, has been at it since 1960 and he once told me that all the tales of Sex and Drugs and Rock'n'Roll, fast cars, wild parties, etc were all true .... and he should know because he's done it all!! I saw him demo a Mexican Strat at a guitar show a few years ago and he stunned the whole show. He then pointed to a kid in the audience and told him he knew his parents had bought him the same model that day. The kid nearly fell over when Eddie handed the guitar to him and told him it was his guitar all along. He told the kid something I'll never forget. "If you play it, and practice it, and play it, and love it, and play it more and love it more ...... one day, it will buy you a Ferrari ..... but not next week. I should know. It's bought me several."

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

    As many of you know, I have the worst luck in the world. However, I have never looked up anything about my acoustic guitar before so I thought I might as well Google it. This is what it says;

Lyle acoustic guitars are a rare type of guitar manufactured in Japan between 1969 and 1980. The guitars were manufactured by the Matsumoku guitar factory for Arai & Co., a company that classical guitarist Shiro Arai created in 1956.

Now, let's not get excited, but maybe I'll be able to have that brewery after all!

I used to... Now I change it one string at a time and stretch it out before swapping any others out. It takes about an hour to change, rather than ~5 mins, but atleast it is in the ball-park without constant tweaking. I generally just thrash out some Pink Floyd with the amp off until I think the strings are fully broken in and then tweak it at the fine tuning pegs for a couple of mins.
