StarkieIs the shed to cold?

1 year ago | Starkie (Member)

Hi everyone,

I've got a Coopers Ginger Beer (alcholic) on the go which smells amazing! Its currently sat in a fermenting bin in the shed. The kit recommended a temp between 22 and 27.

In the day thats not a problem but at night it drops to about 14? I've been told that it should be bubbling away with a nice head on it by now. However after a slow start it is only bubbling very very gently with tiny bubbles. Theres no real head and only a few bubbles move through the airlock when I put a bit of pressure on the lid.

Is this ok? will the night time temperatures slow down the fermentation or cause problems.

I'm just gatherthing justification to sway the misses into letting into the house! haha

Planning - first AG brew
In the Barrel - Golden Ale (woodfords)
In the Fermenter - Elderflower wine
Drinking - Nothing home made

It would be best to keep the temp as constant as you can - at this time of the year though, that can be difficult. I'd suggest getting some radiator insulation and wrapping the FV in that. It should keep the temp in the FV fairly constant - well, better than not having it.

We need to get all our other halves together so they can begin to understand: we are MEN, we brew lol. There are some great plans on the net for converted 'fridges. If you're able, grab a broken one and convert.

    :o)

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer

Agree with Tony. Not ideal but some insulation will help keep the beer warmer at night.

Fermentation is best to be kept as constant as possible but at this time of year it will probably be okay out there, don't tell the missus that though!

    Planning:Maybe a lager.
    Fermenting:
    Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
    Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

For now I've dressed the fermentation bin in an old football shirt and placed inside a sleeping bag. I'll have to stick up a photo as it looks ridiculous.

However i've noticed it is starting to bubble nicely. It's been very warm today though.

I've told her it'll have to come inside in the winter so shes happy with delaying the inevitable! pff!

    Cheers for the help guys
