User has not uploaded an avatarIdeas for 'leftovers' brew

1 year ago | PhilB (Member)

Hi All,

Here's a challenge, I've been given a stack of brew leftovers and it would be good to make up a brew from them. I've got

97g Goldings 4.0 alpha
a 113 packet of Hallertau 2.2 alpha
2.5kg light spraymalt
500g crushed wheat malt
a few packets of S04

I was thinking of the following modification to Greg's Amarillo recipe

60g hops at start of boil with 1kg spraymalt
20g hops at 40mins with 1.5kg spray malt
Flameout at 55mins and steep the rest of the hops for 30mins
make up to 19l and chuck in (sorry rehydrate and pitch lovingly) a packet of the S04

Now my question is will this create undrinkable pond water? any thoughts

Or, does anyone have any creative ideas to use the Hallertau and the crushed wheat malt as well/instead of the above.

Apologies for the question, I'm still really a newbie to this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil, it definably won't make undrinkable pond water. I don't have beersmith here at the moment so can't check the IBUs, might be worth just checking what IBU those goldings will give you as it might be quite bitter with that many at the start of boil.

The Hallertua are great for aroma and the wheat malt can only be used in a mash environment really although you could do a partial mash with it.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.
    Fermenting:
    Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
    Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for the fast response. Alas I'm on a mac so beersmith isn't an option. I roughly did the calculations by hand with the assumption that the alpha on the Amarillo was about 9.5% and the goldings are about 4.4. My assumption was that since the goldings are about 1/2 the alpha of the amarillo I could double the quantity for the same bitterness but I think I may have got my calculation wrong.

    I'll look into that further.

    Cheers

    Phil

I would go for goldings for bittering and hallertau for aroma/taste as some ipa's do this. If ya wanna use halertau all for taste and aroma then 25% @15min, 25% @ 10min, 25% @ flameout and if your feeling good then another 25% for dry hops.

Saying that make sure youve had all peeps suggestions and look around also!

    Ta,

    Hi Phil
I'd do exactly what nath suggests .. sounds like a winner!

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
