hydrometer use
Hi Folks,
awoke this morning to my first ever home brew kit... i got the Wherry, happy days!
anyhow, i didnt realise i had to take hydrometer reading before i put the yeast in, so
is it ok to lift the fv lid and take a sample now or will that upset the fermentation?
also... i haven't seen ahead on the mix yet, but earlier i patted the fv lovingly and the little airlock plastic thing shot up into the air. i'm guessing this is a good sign that the yeast is doin' its thang?
cheers, chris

It shouldnt hurt, just make sure the Hydro is clean & sterilised. You wont get a true reading now as the yeast is probably doing its work even if you cant see it yet.
I use to take readings every day when I first started out just to see what was happening as it was all new to me.
Just record your first reading ASAP. Then untill the ferment stops (same reading for around 2/3days)
You will defo know your ABV% to the least.
I sometimes dont see any activity after 48hrs. If you followed the instructions it will be fine.
Just make sure you keep things clean & constant....thats my moto anyway
Happy Brewing!

Yep bang on, temp is on the high end but nothing to worry about. 1020 is near the end point, I believe wherry should end 1014 / 1012.
