BeermonkeyHow Long Does Sweetness Last?

1 year ago | Neil (Member)

Hello..

Ok so perhaps i've been a little hasty in slating my GW Golden Delicious. It actually now tastes reasonable after i cracked one open on Sunday having been in the bottle 5 weeks. However, it was a tad on the sweet side what i can only describe as pouring sugar directly into your mouth. Now this could be due to the fact i have put 2 tsp of sugar per bottle. 1tsp didn't carbonate it at all the 2nd tsp has made it too sweet.

Now my other half bless her actually came up with a great solution, and that was why not leave it a few weeks and see what happens? I have to doff my hat to her and say it was a good idea. Even if means i am going to have wait 3/4 more weeks to crack open another.

What would other peoples estimations be? Plus will the sweetness go eventually if i do leave it?

Basic questions i know but you know how it is always learning in this hobby of ours.

Cheers everyone
Neil...

Sounds like its not fermented. Problem is that if it now does you'll end up with a mega fizzy brew.

    Is it fizzy now?

Think I'd drink it up and move on.

Oh it had fermented nicely in the barrel etc... i got a really good head on it everything. Just went wrong at the bottling stage. Not sure why really?

Oh well you live and learn.... I'll not waste it though Greg.

Hi Neil. You've already had 1 mega explosion in Norwich (Rackheath?), don't let your brew add to the carnage!

If you leave it in the warm long enough it must ferment out and as the sugar is consumed by the yeast, the sweetness will disappear...... provided, of course, the pressure doesn't blow the things apart!

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

You mean you could hear it south of the border? Trust me it wasn't one of my bottles.

I will put some in my airing cupboard and see what happens. They're in my kitchen right now in the dark and shut up. It's pretty warm in there but gets cold at night.

It has potential that's for sure. I must admit as i said earlier i was perhaps a bit hasty in slating it.

Drink it .. drink it all. Or, invite some mates around and polish it off.

With that much sugar in there I wouldn't take any risks. If you have put some in the airing cupboard, make sure it's wrapped up tightly in something waterproof.

You could always drink it with food - something sweet so you wouldn't notice it so much?

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
