User has not uploaded an avatarHow can I make it more carbonated

1 year ago | Rich22 (Member)

Got a Wherry in a corny at the moment and have had the gas on about 2.5 bar for about 5 days. However it still seems a bit flat to me. How can I get more 'fizz' into the beer?

Drinking : St Peters Ruby Red
Fermenting : Spitfire Clone
Conditioning : Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge
Planning : Speckled Hen Clone

Hmmmm, thats about 30psi. What temperature is it at? The reason I ask is that the beer will absorb more co2 over a shorter time is its cold. If yours is at room temp then 5 days may not be enough.

Some people who have cornys roll them on the floor for 10 mins to force carbonate faster, its not something I would do - health n safety n' all that.

Try to keep it cool, make sure there is actually 30psi in there as the beer will absorb some and you may find you need to top it up to the 2.5bar mark.

Drinkin' - nowt, it's all gone

Got it outside at the moment in shed, so outside temperature still pretty cold especially at night. I even tried going up to 4 bar !! Is it maybe that the temperature is going up and down from night temp to day temp that maybe I'm having this problem.....?

    Tis only 5 days though.

I take it its still pressureized and not leaking from anywhere? Have you tried taking off the tap disconnect filling the corny up with 2.5bar worth of gas then taking the gas disconnect off and leaving it overnight to see if there is a leak?

2.5 bar must be about 35psi, thats plenty surely?.

How much psi do peeps normally use to carbonate an ale for example?.

You maybe able to guess, I'm yet to christen my cornies.

Planning: Wheat beer fermented with Schneider Weisse yeast, a Stout, lots of hoppy pale ales
    Fermenting: Marynka pseudo-lager
    Maturing/Conditioning:
Drinking: Wheat beer, ESB, Vienna lager & shop bought stuff

Regarding carbonation, I was always impressed with how carbonated the old sodastream mixes were. They pushed the CO2 into the bottom of the bottle. Might try injecting gas into corny upside down to get same effect. Just have to be careful that beer does not travel backwards into regulator !!!

    Regards, Chas
