GW's Ringwood 49ER
I made this recipe (from GW book) a few weeks ago using Wyeast Ringwood yeast and I have to say its the one of the nicest bitters I have ever made.
Lovely tawny colour, slight nuttiness and great malty flavour. Very Very moorish.
Highly recommended if you are looking for a nice autumn brew. I'll post a picture later when I get home and pour myself a large one!!
Yay its Friday and its a bank holiday!!!!
Planning:Maybe a lager.

Nice recommendation there. I am going to brew something from GW's book tomorrow, but was a bit stuck on what to try. Was going to do his Tim Taylor Landlord, but my previous brew was pretty Styrian-oriented too, so may just try the 49'er instead.
BTW, I know there's a lot of talk on this site aboout Hop Back Summer lightning. I'm currently drinking (from bottles) the GW recipe for this. Brewed it early July and I have to say it's one of the nicest brews I've made to date. I would deffo recommend trying out that recipe.
I work for an American company, so don't normally take bank holidays, but have tomorrow booked off to get over the depression of having to come home after a week in Tuscanny. Monday off and post-holiday-blues beer. Yeyyyy!!!

My first AG brew was GW's Summer Lightning and I couldn't believe how good it was. I still make this all the time although I have played around with the hop schedule and different yeasts. It works well with more late hop additions and Wyeast 1318 London III or Wyeast 1099 Whitbread.
Most of GW's recipes seem to turn out pretty well. I'm planning the Exmoor Gold soon and may give the Black Sheep a go to.
I'm right in the middle of a brew now, doing a FFF Moondance recipe. First Gold, Northdown and Cascade. Pale, Caragold and black malts to make a Golden Ale of around 4.4% and 40IBU. All it going well so far. Just kegged the porter I made a few weeks ago and that is coming along really nicely. Smells like an expresso!

Well, I knocked together a 20L batch of the Ringwood 49er today. Smelled really good during the boil. Here's the thing, though - this is my second 19-20L batch using my new setup and fly sparging method. Both this time and the last time I've been getting an efficiency of around 85%. By my readings and Beersmith's calculations, this one's going to come in at over 6% abv instead of the 4.9 from the GW book. There goes any nice hoppy taste. Going to decrease my grain bill for the next brew to see if the 85% thing still holds. If it doesn't, no harm done; would prefer a weak beer to a strong tasteless one.
Greg, I tried the Black Sheep Ale from the GW book a short time ago. Now, granted, I got the Goldings and Progess the wrong way round in a moment of stupidity during the boil. I don't know if that should really account for it coming out as disappointing as it did, but maybe you'll have better luck. I also made the mistake of drinking a real bottle of Black Sheep after a bottle of my homemade one. Felt quite the amateur
I've just casked Exe Valley Autumn Glory from GW's book. Again, the high efficiency pushed the ABV away up, but it still tasted pretty good. This was my first use of Styrian Goldings. They give such a nice fruity aftertaste. Can't wait till this one's ready

Barry, why don't you liquor back if you are getting a better than expected SG?

I did consider adding liquor to lower the SG, but didn't know if that would just 'dilute' the flavour from the hops, or would this not be so much that you'd notice?

It will effect the taste a little but it should be okay, probably better than having a 6% version. I wouldn't imagine 2 or 3 litres of water would hurt too much. Its going to be slightly underbittered but again shouldn't be too bad. I remember reading somewhere that our taste buds can really tell the difference in bitterness up to 10 IBU. 49er is more malty than hoppy anyway.

I bought myself a bottle of the real thing last night for a comparison and was very pleased with the result. Colour and clarity was spot on (in fact my had more sparkle to it). Taste wise pretty close, especially seeing the real thing was a bottled beer and mine was kegged.
So congrats to Graham for an excellent recipe which I will be making again soon.
