Golden Syrup
Hello again,
Having had you lovely people help me through my first couple of brews, i decided to turn my attention back to my original bitter kit that came with my youngs brewbuddy set.
Having read up on the stuff i originally noted a lack of enthusiasm for it, and from there decided the best thing to do would be buy something relatively fool proof and enjoyable for my first go to convince me this was a hobby worth investing in, which was a coopers IPA kit, which is now being consumed and well liked by my whole family. Success!
So, having looked in to various ways to improve kit beers i came across a bunch of americans singing the praises of Lyles Golden Syrup in place of sugar due to its ready to go relatively high inverted sugar syrup content, although they were bemoaning the price ($8 a 500g can)
Being totally prepared for this brew to be miserable i thought mixing it up was worth a try, although without actually spending much money, so in the name of very basic experimentation i threw it together last night with 500g Golden Syrup, 500g Unrefined fine brown sugar and make it up to 5L less than it recommended. It appeared to be fermenting this morning, so i'll let you know what happens.
Totally aware this isn't exactly rocket science compared to the All Grain & Extract a few of you are experienced in, and completely prepared to be laughed at for my hilariously cheap tactics, but wondered whether anyone had tried anything like this previously?

Not tried that myself but didn't really do much kit brewing before moving on. Let us know how it turns out, I'm sure it will improve the taste compared with white sugar. Why not try dry hopping the beer to give it some nice, fresh hop aroma.

So, this was all going interestingly well.... Until what I thought was a stroke of luck may have scuppered me!
Yesterday my girlfriend comes home with a brewbelt as a gift! Previously voicing concerns regarding the low temp in our house affecting fermentation I thought this was perfect and put it on the currently brewing bitter all day today. Having got in this evening I have discovered it appears to have finished fermenting, and now smells strongly fruity. Having checked the temp it appears it's been sitting at 26 degrees, which for most brews I believe is ok, however Reading the instructions, this one recommends 18 to 22 degrees.
Oops! So, have I ruined it? I didn't have much hope in the first place so no big loss, or should it mellow out, or just going to be a fruity beer?

26 is a bit on the high side but its only had 24 hrs at that temp so should be okay. I would carry on and give it a try after its been bottled/barreled for a while.

Someone gave me a couple of brewbelts but haven't used them yet, I'm lucky that the kitchen keeps a pretty constant temperature. I bought one of those super cheap digital thermometers from japan and temp stays around 22 all the time.
As Greg says, you should be ok if it was just a day, go ahead and drink it young! :o)

Thanks Chaps,
I'll bottle it in a couple of days, leave it a while and see what the outcome is!
